Nearly 14 years after My Sister’s Keeper premiered, the movie — which stars Cameron Diaz, Alec Baldwin and Abigail Breslin — continues to maintain its popularity in pop culture.

My Sister’s Keeper was released on June 26, 2009, and was based on Jodi Picoult’s novel of the same name. It follows the story of Anna Fitzgerald (Breslin), who was born as a genetic match for her older sister Kate (Sofia Vassilieva) who has leukemia. When Kate needs a kidney transplant, Anna’s parents, Brian (Jason Patric) and Sara (Diaz) turn to her for a donation, but she refuses and chooses to seek medical emancipation with the help of her lawyer, Campbell Alexander (Baldwin).

Anna and Kate also have an older brother, Jesse, who was played by Evan Ellingson. On Nov. 5, 2023, Ellingson was found dead at 35 years old in his Fontana, California, home. His father told TMZ that the actor struggled with addiction and was in a sober-living home.

Following the news of his death, Breslin showed her love for Ellingson, posting a sweet tribute to her former on-screen brother.

“Evan, I know Heaven will welcome you with open arms. Your time on this earth may have been, devastatingly, short,” she wrote on Instagram. “Your humor, exuberance, kindness and bright light will linger forever.”

“Sending you peace on your journey to the great beyond and who knows… maybe one day, I’ll meet you in Montana,” she concluded, referencing the end of the movie when the Fitzgerald family takes a vacation in the state every year as it was Kate’s favorite spot.

Abigail Breslin as Anna Fitzgerald

Breslin was 13 years old when My Sister’s Keeper was released. Since then, she has gone on to have a prolific career in Hollywood, appearing in films like Rango, New Year’s Eve and Ender’s Game. In 2021, she starred opposite Matt Damon in Stillwater.

Breslin also earned her first series regular role in Scream Queens which aired from September 2015 to December 2016.

As for her personal life, Breslin tied the knot with her now-husband Ira Kunyansky on Jan. 28, 2023. The two were linked since 2017 and got engaged in February 2022.

Breslin's latest project is the upcoming crime thriller Miranda’s Victim, in which she plays Patricia "Trish" Weir, who was kidnapped and sexually assaulted in 1963.

Cameron Diaz as Sara Fitzgerald

Diaz worked on a range of projects after My Sister’s Keeper, from Bad Teacher to The Other Woman. However, after her work in 2014’s Annie, Diaz took a break from acting and officially announced in 2017 that she was retiring from the field.

“When you do something at a really high level for a long period of time…all parts of you that isn’t that have to sort of be handed off to other people,” she explained to Kevin Hart in August 2021.

However, in 2022, Diaz announced that she was making her return to acting after actor Jamie Foxx convinced her to join his comedy Back In Action.

In her time away from the screen, Diaz married her husband, Benji Madden, and the two welcomed their first child together, Raddix Madden, on Dec. 30, 2019.

A few months later, in April 2020, Diaz opened up about being a mother and how she was soaking in every minute of it.

"I love being a mother. It's the best, best, best part of my life," she said on an Instagram Live with Who What Wear CEO Katherine Power. "I'm so, so grateful and so happy and it's the best thing ever and I'm so lucky to get to do it with Benji and we're just having the best time. It's so great. I'm just thrilled."

Alec Baldwin as Campbell Alexander

Baldwin starred in a number of projects following My Sister’s Keeper, from Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation to Peacock’s Dr. Death. In October 2021, while Baldwin was filming the movie Rust, he discharged a gun that was being used as a prop and killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injured director Joel Souza.

Baldwin was charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter in January 2023 which were dropped three months later. However, Baldwin could still face criminal charges as special prosecutors plan to bring the case to a New Mexico grand jury.

Since Baldwin starred in My Sister’s Keeper in 2009, his family life has flourished as he tied the knot with his wife Hilaria Baldwin in 2012 and the pair have since welcomed seven children together. They share three daughters, Carmen Gabriela, María Lucía Victoria, and Ilaria Catalina Irena, as well as four sons Rafael Thomas, Leonardo Ángel Charles, Romeo Alejandro David and Eduardo "Edu" Pao Lucas. Alec is also dad to daughter Ireland Baldwin, whom he shares with ex-wife Kim Basinger.

In an October 2023 appearance on SiriusXM’s Let's Talk Off Camera with Kelly Ripa, Baldwin said he is “done” having children. He shared that ahead of a recent surgery, the doctors warned him there was a nerve near his pelvic area that could be cut and he told them they could go ahead and "rip it."

“‘Oh, you can just rip that out if you want. Just take that nerve, get a pair of pliers and just pull it out during the surgery because I don't need that anymore,’ ” he said he told the doctor. He concluded, “We're done.”

Evan Ellingson as Jesse Fitzgerald

Ellingson continued to act after My Sister’s Keeper and was the son of David Caruso's Lt. Horatio Caine on CSI: Miami. He also played nephew to Kiefer Sutherland's Jack Bauer on 24.

10 years after his last on-screen appearance, Ellingson was found dead in a bedroom at his home on Nov. 5, 2023. His cause of death has yet to be determined.

Breslin wrote a touching tribute to the actor on her Instagram, lauding him as a “kind, funny and extremely talented human being.”

“Evan was a genuinely thoughtful person who cared so much about turning in the best performance, which he accomplished,” she wrote. “Some of his scenes in MSK still give me chills. He was also silly, funny, a prankster, a lover of Red Bull (I hated the smell of Red Bull 😂) and he was energetic and the life of the party.”

Sofia Vassilieva as Kate Fitzgerald

Following her performance as Kate in My Sister’s Keeper, Vassilieva went on to star in an episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit in 2011 and reprised the same role in 2013.

She graduated from Columbia College in 2014 and has continued to make guest appearances in episodes of shows including Lucifer, Criminal Minds, Chicago Fire and Blue Bloods.

Jason Patric as Brian Fitzgerald

Patric returned to the Broadway stage after the movie and starred opposite Brian Cox, Kiefer Sutherland and Jim Gaffigan in a reprisal of the play That Championship Season.

He has continued to star in movies, most recently in 2022’s Nightshade and 2020’s Becoming.

Joan Cusack as Judge Joan De Salvo

Cusack, who played the judge who heard Anna and Sara’s case, worked in some voice roles after her work in My Sister’s Keeper. She voiced Jessie in Toy Story 3 and Toy Story 4, as well as in other Toy Story spin-offs.

She also had a recurring role on the show Shameless as Sheila and appeared on the first five seasons of the show between 2011 and 2015. Additionally, Cusack had roles in 2018's Instant Family and 2019's Klaus, where she voiced Mrs. Krum.

In her personal life, Cusack has been married to her husband Richard Burke since 1996, and the pair have two children together: Dylan and Miles.
