It's been nearly 20 years since Tim Burton's Corpse Bride rose to life on screens. The stop-motion movie has become a spooky classic, due in no small part to its star-studded cast. The animated Everglot and Van Dort families are voiced by several veteran performers including Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Tracey Ullman and more.

Check back in with the stars of the Corpse Bride during your annual rewatch this Halloween season.

Johnny Depp - Victor Van Dort

Johnny Depp and Tim Burton's collaborations date back years before he lent his voice to Victor Van Dort, the somber groom-to-be whose arranged marriage is intercepted by the misunderstood Corpse Bride. He began playing Burton's leading men in 1990 when he starred in Edward Scissorhands. Depp continued in the director's following films Ed Wood, Sleepy Hollow and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

After Corpse Bride, the versatile actor appeared in Burton's 2007 musical Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, his 2010 Alice in Wonderland adaptation and its 2016 sequel, Alice Through the Looking Glass.

Beyond his work in Tim Burton productions, Depp made a name for himself with his performances in the '80s and early '90s, in films such as A Nightmare on Elm Street and on the TV series 21 Jump Street. He went on to star in What's Eating Gilbert Grape, Dead Man and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

Just before voicing Victor Van Dort, Depp landed one of his most iconic roles as Captain Jack Sparrow in Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean film series. He reprised the swashbuckler for five films, the most recent having premiered in 2017.

Helena Bonham Carter - Emily, the Corpse Bride

Helena Bonham Carter voiced Emily, the undead, heartbroken bride-to-be-but-never-was. At the time, Carter was in a long-term relationship with Burton, whom she worked with on several feature films — including Big Fish, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Alice in Wonderland and Dark Shadows.

From 2007 through 2011, Carter was the villainous witch Bellatrix Lestrange in the Harry Potter film series. She also appeared in Disney's 2015 live-action adaption of Cinderella and in the 2018 heist comedy Ocean's 8. Most recently, she starred alongside Millie Bobbie Brown in Netflix's Enola Holmes and played Princess Margaret on season 3 and 4 of The Crown.

Over the course of her career, Carter has received several nominations for major acting awards. She received an Oscar nod for her supporting role in 2011's The King's Speech. She won a BAFTA and a SAG award for the part as well. Carter also took home back-to-back SAG awards for her performance in The Crown.

Emily Watson - Victoria Everglot

Watson already boasted an impressive resumé and a couple of Oscar nominations before she voiced Victoria Everglot, Victor's still-alive fiancé in the animated flick. The actress earned two Best Actress nods from the Academy for her big screen debut in 1996's Breaking the Waves and in 1998's Hilary and Jackie.

At the start of 2000s, Watson starred as Adam Sandler's love interest in Punch-Drunk Love and shared the screen with Anthony Hopkins in Red Dragon, a prequel to Silence of the Lambs.

Her film career continued on steadily after the Corpse Bride. She costarred with Ewan McGregor and Renée Zellweger in Miss Potter and then with Julia Roberts in Fireflies in the Garden. Watson appeared in Steven Spielberg's 2011 drama War Horse, and she played Stephen Hawking's mother-in-law in The Theory of Everything.

Watson and her husband, Jack Waters, welcomed their daughter Juliet just after the premiere of Corpse Bride in the fall of 2005. Their son Dylan was born a few years later.

Tracey Ullman - Nell Van Dort/Hildegarde

Corpse Bride fans remember Ullman's voice as Nell Van Dort, the mother of the groom, and as Victoria Everglot's loyal maid, Hildegarde. However, she was already an Emmy-, BAFTA- and SAG Award-winning comedian with critically acclaimed specials and variety shows prior to joining the production.

Ullman continued her film career after the Corpse Bride. She flaunted her flair for song in the 2014 movie-musical Into the Woods and in Ryan Murphy's 2020 flick The Prom — both of which costarred James Corden and Meryl Streep.

Paul Whitehouse

Whitehouse was an established variety series star in the British comedy scene when he was cast to voice Victor Van Dort's father and their family carriage driver, Mayhew. The stop-motion movie was one of his first few roles on the big screen. He followed the animated feature with voice work in two more Tim Burton features as well: his 2010 adaptation of Alice in Wonderland and its sequel, Alice Through the Looking Glass.

Before her stint as the mother of the bride, Lady Maudeline Everglot, Lumley won two BAFTAs for her performance as Patsy Stone in the sitcom Absolutely Fabulous. On the big screen, she previously appeared in Tim Burton's James and the Giant Peach in 1996 and alongside Anne Hathaway in 2004's Ella Enchanted.

Post-Corpse Bride, Lumley has been in other major motion pictures like The Wolf of Wall Street and Paddington 2. Her starring performance on Broadway in La Bête earned her a Tony nomination for best featured actress in 2011.

Albert Finney

Finney died in 2019 at age 82, after an eight-year battle with kidney cancer. Before his death, the actor spent his prolific career on the stage and on screens, big and small. Finney had been nominated for several major awards before he voiced Victoria's father, Lord Finis Everglot, and her skeletal grandfather living in the underworld.

He earned five Oscar nods for his performances in Tom Jones, Murder on the Orient Express, The Dresser, Under the Volcano and Erin Brockovich. He won two BAFTA awards — first, for most promising newcomer to leading film roles in 1961. He won a BAFTA TV award in 2003 for his work on the series The Gathering Storm, which also nabbed him a third Golden Globe and an Emmy.

Finney also notably starred as Ebenezer himself in the 1970 musical Scrooge and played Daddy Warbucks in Annie.

Richard E. Grant - Barkis Bittern

The Corpse Bride's ultimate villain, Barkis Bittern, was voiced by Richard E. Grant. Leading up to his part in the spooky undead movie, the actor was best known for his film debut in Withnail & I in 1987 and in several features that followed, like Hudson Hawk, The Portrait of a Lady and Gosford Park.

After playing the scheming Lord Barkis, Grant appeared alongside Meryl Streep in The Iron Lady and in the Natalie Portman-led Jacqueline Kennedy biopic, Jackie. His performance as Jack Hock in 2018's Can You Ever Forgive Me? earned nominations for an Oscar, a Golden Globe, a BAFTA and a SAG award.

In 2023, Grant published A Pocketful of Happiness, his diaristic memoir reflecting on his life and career.
