'Cassandro' movie, based on El Paso pro wrestler, to release in September

The film about El Paso's amateur wrestler Cassandro will be in select theaters Sept. 15. It will stream on Prime Video Sept. 22.

"Cassandro" stars Gael García Bernal as Saúl Armendáriz, a gay amateur wrestler who goes through a lot of hardship before gaining international stardom after he creates the "exotico" character. Exoticos are male wrestlers who dress in drag.

In his career, Armendáriz was described as the Liberache of Lucha Libre.

Based on a true story, the wrestler is able to not only upend the macho wrestling world but also his own life.

The film is directed by Academy Award winner Roger Ross Williams.

In 2020, Armendáriz said he was a fan of Gael's and was excited to have him play him in the movie.

"I have followed Gael's career since 'Amor de Perros' and 'Y Tu Mamá También.' He's a great actor and I'm putting all my trust in him," he said at the time. García Bernal is one of the executive producers of the film.

Also starring in the film are Joaquín Cosío and Raúl Castillo, with special appearances from El Hijo del Santo and Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, otherwise known as Bad Bunny.Armendáriz is listed as a consultant.
