Casey Anthony stands for the arrival of the jury on July, 5, 2011 ; George and Cindy Anthony attend a court hearing in Orlando, Florida, on May 19, 2009.

Casey Anthony has an estranged relationship with her parents, George and Cindy Anthony.

In 2008, Casey was charged with the murder of her 2-year-old daughter Caylee, who was missing for six months before her remains were found in a wooded area near the family’s home. However, she was acquitted of the murder charges in 2011 while being found guilty of multiple counts of providing false information to law enforcement.

Over a decade after her trial, Casey spoke out in the November 2022 documentary Casey Anthony: Where The Truth Lies, in which she accused her father of being the one who found Caylee deceased and abusing both of them.

"He'd put a pillow over my face and smother me to knock me out," she said in the documentary. "That happened several times. I'm sure there were times where I was incapacitated as a child where my body was limp and lifeless."

She also added that she worried he had moved on to abusing Caylee. "That's what I think about," she said. "I wish every day I had said something to someone about something. Maybe then things would be different."

George vehemently denied the accusations and has never been charged. He did not return PEOPLE’s request for comments at the time.

Both George and Cindy participated in the Casey Anthony’s Parents: The Lie Detector Test documentary, airing Jan. 4, 2024, on A&E and Lifetime. The couple answered questions about their daughter and the case while hooked up to a polygraph machine that marked if they were telling the truth or not.

From their feelings about reuniting with their daughter to Casey’s accusations against them, here’s everything to know about Casey Anthony’s parents, George and Cindy Anthony.

George and Cindy got married in March 1981 and have remained together since — despite rumors they split. The pair continue to live together in their home in Florida.

The couple welcomed their first child, Lee, before giving birth to Casey on March 19, 1986, in Ohio. Lee testified at Casey’s trial against his sister, saying that she hid her pregnancy from him until she was showing, which “hurt” him. He was not present at the birth of his niece.

"I was just angry at everyone in general that they didn't want to include me and didn't find it important enough to tell me, especially after I'd already asked,” he said during the trial, per Newsweek. “So, I was really hurt and I don't think I wanted to believe it."

Casey went on to accuse both Lee and her father of sexually abusing her, which Lee also denied.

“[It] wasn’t the same thing that happened with my father,” she said in the 2022 documentary. “My brother never raped me. No, absolutely not. But it was close enough — close enough where there was a pattern.”

As of 2018, the brother and sister do not have a relationship. Lee married his longtime girlfriend Mallory Parker in 2012 and welcomed a baby the following year. While Casey had met her nephew, she didn’t have a relationship with him either, per a source.

Lee has frozen her out of his life,” the source told PEOPLE. “And that’s fine by her.”

Cindy said Casey “put [them] through hell”

George and Cindy Anthony arrive at the Orange County Courthouse for their daughter's first-degree murder trial, in Orlando, Florida on May 24, 2011.

Though Cindy remained primarily out of the public eye after the trial ended, she spoke out in a March 2022 interview on Investigation Discovery’s Crime Scene Confidential, where she reflected on the defense’s claims that Caylee drowned in the family pool.

"What the eff was she thinking?" Cindy asked. "Why the heck didn't she tell us? Why didn't she call somebody. None of this would've happened. And it's like, oh my gosh, she put us through hell. I know if I had found Caylee drowned in the pool, I would've been devastated and blamed myself for the rest of my life."

A source close to the family told PEOPLE that Cindy still holds resentment toward her daughter for the aftermath of Caylee’s disappearance and her claims in the trial.

"She is still angry a lot of the time," the family insider said. "This was a loving grandmother who had to withstand family trauma that no one should ever have to deal with. So when she starts talking about Casey and Caylee, she gets really upset, even now."

While the mother-daughter duo didn’t speak for many years following the trial, they have had sporadic communication since 2022.

"At first, Cindy wanted answers. She wanted to know what had happened, why this had happened,” the source said. “She wanted Casey to explain the hell she put everyone through. Now she realizes that there's no point asking Casey anything because she is never going to get any straight answers. So what's the point?"

Though George is confident his daughter did something wrong, the source said Cindy is unsure and mainly “sad about the way things turned out.”

After seeing their daughter during a hearing her parents, Cindy and George Anthony leave the courthouse holding hands on March 18, 2010, in Orlando, Florida.

In 2018, George was in a serious car crash where his vehicle flipped several times, leaving him critically injured.

Following the accident, a source close to Casey told PEOPLE that she had no plans to reach out to George as their relationship remained fractured.

She didn’t talk to him for years before the accident,” the source said. “Why would she talk to him now? It wouldn’t make any sense. She has no intention to talk to him.”

Regardless, a year later, George shared during an episode of Dr. Oz that he would be open to reconciling with his estranged daughter.

“I just want to let her know how I felt,” he says. “I know of one thing I did say to her: ‘I would love to see you and I would love for mom to know where you’re at, how you’re doing.'”

George continued: “I said, ‘Casey, no matter what, I’m still your dad and I love you.’ That was hard for me, but I needed to get that from me because you can’t move on if you keep on holding all these things inside, you need to be able to express yourself.”

Casey accused George of sexually assaulting her and being responsible for Caylee’s death

Beyond accusing her father of sexual assault during the trial, Casey doubled down on her claims in Where The Truth Lies — and added that she thinks he is to blame for her daughter’s death. In the documentary, Casey detailed her recollection of the day Caylee was last seen in June 2008.

She shared that she wasn’t feeling well and wanted to lie down and had Caylee lie in bed with her.

"I was awoken by [my father] shaking me and asking me where Caylee was," she said. "That didn't make sense. She would never even leave my room without telling me. I immediately started looking around the house. I go outside and I'm looking to see where she could be."

Then, she said, she saw George holding Caylee, who was soaking wet.

“He handed her to me. Said it was my fault. That I caused it,” she said. “But he didn't rush to call 911 and he wasn't trying to resuscitate her. I collapsed with her in my arms. She was heavy, and she was cold."

Later, Casey said she left to go to her boyfriend’s but was under the impression that Caylee was alive after George assuaged her that everything would be okay.

Cindy and George took lie detector tests in a documentary telling their side of the story

Cindy and George sat down to take a filmed lie detector test airing in January 2024. They were asked questions while hooked up to the polygraph, leading to an emotional interview.

"Yes, I believe [Casey knows what happened], 100 percent. I kept hoping upon hope that she would confess," Cindy said in the documentary. "And that's the only reason I've been putting myself through all of her drama and everything."

At one point in the interview, when Cindy was asked about the accusations Casey made against her and George, she started to have a panic attack and had to leave the room.

"I'm having a hard time. I'm having a panic attack. I'm sorry. I'm gonna take my anxiety pills. I'm sorry," Cindy said, entering another room where George held her and calmed her down. "I'm starting to lose it. I'm starting to faint. I'm starting to pass out."

George, for his part, was asked if he knew or concealed Caylee’s whereabouts during the case, to which he hesitated before saying no. The interviewer asked him why he was struggling to answer that question, and he said it was because Caylee was found “so close” to his house.

"I was just visualizing the woods where she was found. I'm sorry, I'm sorry,” he said.
