"I think in another life I was a butcher," the 'Today' show co-host tells PEOPLE in the 2023 Sexiest Man Alive issue

In Carson Daly’s marriage to food blogger Siri Pinter, she handles the cooking, while he does the grilling.

“My wife is the big cook in the family. I just love to barbecue,” Daly, 52, tells PEOPLE in the “Yes Chef” section of this week’s Sexiest Man Alive 2023 issue, in which stars share their favorite recipes. “I think in another life I was a butcher. I love the idea of just meat in general and fire and friends and not working.”

When Daly does grill, he’ll pair the steak with some of Pinter's side dishes. “My wife makes an incredible smashed potato,” he says. “It's a crispy potato that she smashes. There's garlic and butter and salt and it's crunchy and great. A great bottle of wine and a nice leafy salad. That's just a delicious meal for me.”

The Today show co-host calls cooking “a healthy distraction” from “the stress of the job and our busy lives.”

“It's something we think about now all day, ‘What's for dinner?’” says Daly, who shared his recipe for a reverse-seared bone-in ribeye steak with PEOPLE. “And then what's that process going to be like? Who's got to go to the store? What store are we going to go to get the best ingredients for whatever we're making? It's fun. It's something that we can all center our attention around as far as putting a good meal together, sitting around as a family.”

Daly’s son Jackson, 14, has started getting in on meal prep, too.

“My 14-year-old has taken an incredible liking to cooking, especially now he makes steaks,” Daly says. “He goes outside and makes a big fire and does a campfire steak and he really knows techniques and what he's doing.”

The host of The Voice hopes his son picks up on his tendency to clean up after himself in the kitchen.

“I definitely try and clean up as I go because I've seen the wrath if I don't,” Daly says. “And I notice my 14-year-old son now loves to cook and he's incredible and I follow him around like a mad scientist kind of picking up after him and putting things away so that my wife doesn't have to deal with it at a later point.”

Daly loves using Snake River Farms steak seasoning on his steak, so much so that he orders it in from Idaho.

“I never thought of really ordering food from places,” the father of four says. “I would go to my local market and buy whatever was available, but I discovered SRF in Idaho and I started ordering their meat. It's this really great company that's been around since the 1980s, and they've expanded and take a lot of great, humane practices into what they do.”

Daly says she makes his steak recipe “maybe once a week” for his family and serves it as a go-to when people come over for dinner. “Now that I know how to cook it properly and I don't worry about screwing it up, I love to make it for people,” he says.

But Daly calls the company around the table the best part of cooking.

"Four o'clock to 7:00 in the Daly household around the kitchen [is] centered around dinner that night, kids of doing homework in and out for sports,” he says. “Food is at the epicenter of the household.”
