Country-pop star Carrie Underwood opened the first two shows of Guns N’ Roses ‘ 2023 North American tour, and she worked a handful of rock classics into her setlist on each occasion.
Underwood’s first support slot for GN’R came this past Saturday (August 5th) in Moncton, New Brunswick, where she opened with Joan Jett’s “Bad Reputation” and played Pat Benatar’s “Hit Me with Your Best Shot,” The Rolling Stones’ “Wild Horses,” Led Zeppelin’s “Rock and Roll,” and lastly and most notably, the Motörhead staple “Ace of Spades.”
Hearing Underwood and her band take on a song bordering on heavy metal is a treat, proving that the singer can pull off heavy music with as much energy and conviction as her standard Nashville fare. Of course, it also appeals to the crowd largely consisting of GN’R fans.
If that wasn’t enough, Underwood later appeared onstage during Guns N’ Roses’ “Sweet Child o’ Mine” and “Paradise City,” as she has done in the past (Underwood and Axl Rose have traded duets at one another’s respective shows numerous times).
For Underwood’s second show with Guns N’ Roses on Tuesday (August 8th) in Montreal, she shortened the set by a few songs but still included the Joan Jett, Rolling Stones, and Motörhead covers. She again appeared alongside GN’R for “Sweet Child o’ Mine” and “Paradise City.”
