Our feature series Origins provides artists with a space to break down everything that went into their latest release. Today, Carpool takes us through their new single, “No News is Good News.”

Emo-pop revolutionaries Carpool are back with the latest single from their upcoming album, My Life in Subtitles. The new track, “No News Is Good News,” continues their perfect formula of crafting the catchiest pop-punk inspired emo in the scene right now.

The song is explosive, just like the previous two singles from the forthcoming album (“Can We Just Get High” and “Open Container Blues”), but lyrically it is more downtempo and introspective than the rush of buzzing excitement and fast-paced collapse featured on the prior tracks.

The song is propelled forward by driving drums and emo’s signature twinkly guitars, and the dramatic, near-yelling vocals make the song instantly powerful. The titular phrase and theme of the song are catchy and thought-provoking.

“I always thought it was really cool how you can apply it to be cavalier, happy, or sad about a topic or situation,” Chris (Stoph) Colasanto tells Consequence.

Listen to the new track, “No News Is Good News,” below, and read on for the band’s breakdown of the song’s inspirations.

My Life in Subtitles drops on March 22nd via SideOneDummy Records, and pre-orders are ongoing. The band will embark on a tour in March.

Exhaustion of News Media:

The artwork was inspired by the overwhelming exhaustion of news media forced down your throat on a daily basis. Tommy made the art for fun, and I saw it on the floor of his bedroom and was like, “Cousin, this is so sick we gotta use this.”

Harold and Maude:

This is my favorite movie of all time. I think there’s a lot of common themes between the entire record and this film. Essentially, life is just one big chaotic existential crisis, but if you can approach the dark unknown with a light heart and humor, maybe you’ll see things aren’t all that bad. I tried to compost these feelings into the lyrics.

Don Quixote:

I think anyone who tries to make art in any capacity shares personality traits with the titular character. When you’re in the process of making something, people tend to lose grasp on the reality of the world around them, and become more or less quixotic — myself included. When telling stories, though, I think you need to be idealistic.

The Simpsons:

“Drunk as a poet on payday.” The smartest television show ever written. Once again, showing characters tackling the darker side of the mundane every day with humor, self-deprecation, and experience.

My mom would use the adage, “No news is good news” a lot when I was growing up. It always kinda stuck with me. I always thought it was really cool how you can apply it to be cavalier, happy, or sad about a topic or situation. Like most things, the context is the most important part. I like how the phrase can be a bridge to a story.
