The tragically short-lived romance of Carolyn Bessette and John F. Kennedy Jr. had many ups and downs, despite their glamorous public appearance. From breakups to those infamous photos of the couple arguing in Central Park, the couple’s relationship issues were well documented but even still, little is known about the inner workings of their marriage.

A 2019 biography about JFK Jr. revealed many previously unknown details about his romance with the Calvin Klein publicist, including claims that Bessette would confide in her friends about intimacy issues with JFK’s son.

According to America’s Reluctant Prince: The Life of John F. Kennedy Jr. author Steven M. Gillon, Bessette, who began dating Kennedy is 1994, made it clear to her pals that her attraction for the beloved heartthrob was waning by 1998.

Bessette was allegedly asking friends for advice on “keep the passion” alive and told them Kennedy was “not my type.” Gillon writes, “For some reason, she seemed to relish telling people that she was not sexually attracted to her husband, as if she alone did not share the common perception of him as one of the sexiest men alive.”

This was a rather drastic change of opinion from her previous opinion of Kennedy, according to Gillon who alleged that Bessette had her sights set on Kennedy since before they met.

A college friend of Bessette’s claimed the future socialite dubbed John her “dream guy” and alleged Bessette would tell her: “I’m going to move to New York and I’m going to get him.” It was Bessette’s goal in life “to be famous,” said the college friend. “Maybe if I hook up with the right guy I will be famous,” she’d allegedly mused.

That move to New York happened when Bessette was promoted from her position at a Calvin Klein store in Boston to a position handling celebrity clients at the brand’s flagship New York store. Bessette and Kennedy met at a charity function, while he was still in a relationship with actress Daryl Hannah, but he allegedly made a habit of going to the New York store in hopes of running into Bessette.

The couple tied the knot in an intimate 1996 ceremony in Georgia but they tragically didn’t get to live out their marriage. In 1999, Kennedy, Bessette and her older sister, Lauren, died when the plane Kennedy was piloting crashed into the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Cape Cod.
