Carolina Panthers Owner Jerry Richardson To Sell Team Amid “Workplace Misconduct” Allegations
Carolina Panthers owner Jerry Richardson announced today that is looking to sell the team. The news comes shortly after the NFL launched an investigation regarding accusations of “workplace misconduct” made against him.
Four former Carolina Panthers employees received settlements from Richardson after they claimed he made inappropriate comments, according to Sports Illustrated. On one occasion, Richardson allegedly directed a racial slur at African-American Panthers scout.
Amid the accusations, Richardson posted a letter on the Carolina Panthers website (which can be read below) announcing that he is selling the team. In it, he expresses his gratitude towards the players, fans, and the Carolina community.
“Football is also an integral part of my life — and I am blessed, every day, that I made the Carolinas my home,” he wrote. “I can never repay all of you for the kindness and generosity you have shown me, Rosalind, and my family for more than two decades.”
Richardson, who created the franchise in 1993, went on to say, “I believe that it is time to turn the franchise over to new ownership. Therefore, I will put the team up for sale at the conclusion of this NFL season.”
The letter did not mention the allegations facing him.
The news of Richardson’s alleged workplace misconduct and selling of the Panthers comes at a time when three NFL Network analysts were suspended after a former employee claimed that they sexually harassed her.
