Carlo Vittorini, longtime magazine publisher, dies at 94

Carlo Vittorini, former advertising executive and publisher of Parade magazine, died June 25 at his Nantucket summer home in Massachusetts.

He was 94 years old.

Born on Feb. 28, 1929, in Philadelphia, he was the son of Domenico Vittorini, a professor of Romance languages and a Dante scholar at the University of Pennsylvania, and Helen (née Whitney) Vittorini.

He grew up in Haverford and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a bachelor's degree in journalism.

After graduation, he joined the U.S. Army Reserves and served for seven years.

His 50-year business career began with a job as a promotion associate and progressed to merchandising manager, advertising sales representative, advertising manager and finally, publisher.

He was publisher of Redbook from 1965 to 1975; president of Charter Publishing from 1975-1978; and in 1979 became president and CEO of Parade publications.

In his 21 years as publisher of Parade, he grew its annual revenue from $150 million to more than $500 million and tripled its circulation to 37 million in 750 newspapers. He retired in 2000 as chairman and CEO of Parade Publications.

Mr. Vittorini was married twice. His 40-year marriage to Alice Hellerman ended in divorce. Shortly after, he married Nancy Coleman, who survives him.

Mr. Vittorini and his wife moved to Palm Beach two years ago and became members of The Society of the Four Arts, the Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach, and the Sailfish Club.

In addition to Nancy, his wife of nearly 30 years, Mr. Vittorini is survived by his son, Stephen Whitney Vittorini (wife Gayle); grandchildren Stephen, Hope, Robert, Thomas, and Charles; his stepson, Frank Coleman (wife Megan); stepdaughter Ashley Frisbie (husband Robert Jr.); nephew Robert Spurck and niece Susan Harding.

A family memorial service will be held in Nantucket in late September. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Nantucket Cottage Hospital, 57 Prospect St., Nantucket, MA 02554.
