Carl Weathers, Apollo Creed from ‘Rocky,’ Dead At 76

Carl Weathers, actor, director, and retired NFL linebacker, has died at the age of 76. His family confirmed in a statement to Variety on Friday (Feb. 2) that Weathers “died peacefully in his sleep” on Thursday (Feb. 1).

“We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Carl Weathers,” said the family. “Carl was an exceptional human being who lived an extraordinary life. Through his contributions to film, television, the arts and sports, he has left an indelible mark and is recognized worldwide and across generations. He was a beloved brother, father, grandfather, partner, and friend.”

Born on Jan. 14, 1948, in New Orleans, Weathers got his big break for starring as Apollo Creed in 1976’s Rocky. He then went on to continue the role in Rocky II, Rocky III, and Rocky IV.

Throughout his career, the prolific actor also landed roles in 1987’s Predator and had won over many hearts for his unforgettable role in Adam Sandler’s Happy Gilmore. He was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for his work in the Star Wars series The Mandalorian. He was also the voice for Combat Carl in Toy Story 4 and other Disney shorts.

Not only did Weathers shine on screen, he was a star on the football field as well. He played collegiately at San Diego State University and then played professionally for the Oakland Raiders. According to his biography, he retired in 1974 to pursue his acting career.

Weathers is survived by his ex-wife, Mary Ann, and their two sons.
