Cardi B has clapped back at people who criticize her usage of songwriters, as the rapper claims that “all” of fans’ “favorite artists” receive assistance in the creation of their hits.

Over the weekend, Cardi responded to a social media user questioning her statements about the Bronx being Hip-Hop’s birthplace, in which the detractor noted that the Grammy Award-winner doesn’t write many of the lyrics in her own songs. In her defense, she explained that her musical aspirations preceded her turn as a reality TV star on VH1’s Love & Hip Hop franchise and was an outlet to detail her experiences as an exotic dancer.

“I started music before LHH and wrote about MY struggles and life as a dancer,” the 30-year-old explained. “Go listen to them mixtapes also I went to school for musical theatre and technology.”

While admitting to having helping hands in the studio, she says that most of that assistance doesn’t pertain to her verses. “Just because somebody might help me with a hook means nothing,” she added. “Look at all ya fav artists’ credits. They all do receive some type of help.”

The Invasion of Privacy rapper also stood behind her statements regarding Hip-Hop reflecting her “life” and “her culture” while at the MTV VMAs last week. “Ya just be wanting to disagree with everything I say but facts are facts like google it,” she said in response to critics of her claim.

“Where did hop hop start at.. THE BRONX!!! Where I’m from? Not the Caribbean island Hip hop came from talking about the struggle and thats something I def lived so how that’s not my culture??? How can you tell me what I do or what I lived.. culture is literally the environment of what you came up in.”

Cardi B recently released her latest single “Bongos” featuring Megan Thee Stallion. The song marks their second collaboration following their chart-topping 2020 single “W.A.P.,” which debuted atop the Billboard Hot 100 and has since been certified 7× Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
