Cardi B Muses on Grammy Win: 'I Cry Because I Know the Hell I Went Through' Making This Album

Cardi B is reflecting on all the work that went into making Invasion of Privacy — her Grammy Award-winning album.

After taking home the gramophone for best rap album Sunday, Cardi, 26, revealed that prior to her debut album’s release, she spent many nights in the studio, sacrificed time away from her family and even battled depression due to the public’s reaction to her pregnancy with her baby daughter Kulture Kiari.

“Slept in the studio on leather sofas for 3 months straight, migraines, in Atlanta in Miami away from my family. I have 4 songs that couldn’t make the album cause my nose was so stuffy bro I was huffy puffy,” Cardi captioned a congratulatory post from Chance the Rapper on Instagram Monday.

“This is overly deserved, the album was front-to-back hits. It would be inconceivable not to honor u last night,” Chance, 25, who was featured on the project, wrote.

“I had @offsetyrn and @brooklyn.johnny reaching out to the world for a verse on top of that I was depress [sic] cause everybody was suspecting I was pregnant and I constantly kept reading Cardi you ‘STUPID,’ ‘YOU RUINED YOUR CAREER,’ ‘WHY WOULD YOU HAVE A BABY AT THE BEGINNING OF YOUR CAREER,'” Cardi continued tagging her husband Offset.

“My album went #1 and spend [sic] 21 weeks straight on billboard top ten! Every song is gold or platinum or higher. I listen to my album and I cry because I know the hell I went thruu doing the album is always a bittersweet memory.”

“THANK YOU EVERYONE THAT SUPPORTED ME AND LISTEN. I’m thankful and grateful and again thank you to all the artist that gave me a feature,” Cardi added.

Cardi also gave a shoutout to the later Mac Miller, as well as Nipsey Hussle, Pusha T and Travis Scott, who were all nominated for the same award after rapper J Cole wrote “Seeing Cardi b win a Grammy make me feel like I won. Same wit jay rock and Anderson. I feel for Travis cuz he really deserved that acknowledgment as well, but his moment is way bigger than the awards could say.”

“I wanna thank my daughter,” Cardi said during her speech. “Not just because she’s my daughter, it’s because when I found I was pregnant, my album was not complete … we was like, ‘We have to get this album done so we can shoot these videos while I was still not showing,’ and it was very long nights.”

She also thanked Offset. “Nah, ’cause seriously he was like, ‘You gonna do this album, girl. We gonna have this baby and we gonna make this album.’ “

Along with rap album, Cardi was nominated for a total of five awards, including the coveted album of the year title.
