Cardi B, The Carters, Childish Gambino Lead 2018 MTV VMA Nominations

By Desire Thompson

Cardi B is in very good company for MTV’s Video Music Awards. The nominations announced Monday (July 16) show the Bronx rapper in the lead with ten nominations, followed by Jay-Z and Beyonce with eight and Childish Gambino with seven.

Cardi’s accolades span across categories like Best “Video,” “Song,” and “Collaboration” for her work on the “Finesse” remix with Bruno Mars. The Carters’ “APES***T” rules over “Best Hip Hop” and “Video of the Year” categories while Gambino’s poignant video for “This Is America” takes over “Video With A Message” and the “Video of the Year” slots.

Drake’s “God Plan” also holds a spot for “Song” and “Video of the Year” nods while rookies like Tee Grizzley, Lil Uzi Vert, Chloe x Halle and Lil Pump take over the “Best New Artist” and “Push” nominations respectfully.

The year in music has been a dynamic one, making the stakes higher than ever. Bruce Gillmer, Head of Music and Music Talent, promises the show will reflect the many messages heard this year.

“It has already been a monumental year in music, and this year’s ‘VMAs’ will take things to a whole new level,” Gillmer said in a press release.

“The extraordinary group of nominees have amazed us with their talent and inspired us with their creativity – and when you get them together for one night, anything is possible.”

Beginning today, fans can vote for their fave on MTV’s website until Friday, August 10.

Voting for the “Best New Artist” award, presented by Taco Bell®, will remain open until the VMA broadcast on Monday August 20 at 9 pm ET.
