Cardi B Apologizes to Martin Luther King’s Family Over “Real Housewives of Civil Rights” Skit
Earlier today, TMZ shared a video of Cardi B portraying Martin Luther King Jr.’s late wife Coretta Scott King in a satirical sketch called “The Real Housewives of the Civil Rights Movement.” The clip shows several women arguing over Dr. King, who is referred to at one point as a “hoe.” Dr. King’s family, including son Martin Luther King III and daughter Bernice King, disapproved of the skit and called it “repulsive.”
Bernice King has since tweeted at Cardi, thanking her for “reaching out and apologizing” and saying she looks “forward to talking with [Cardi] soon.” See the tweet below. Pitchfork has reached out to Cardi B’s representatives for further comment.
“The Real Housewives of the Civil Rights Movement” was taken from an upcoming sketch comedy series called “Off the Rip,” which is helmed by “Wild N Out”’s Rip Michaels. As the Kings pointed out, the video was leaked on the 55th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s historic “I Have a Dream” speech in Washington, D.C.
Earlier this year, Stevie Wonder shared a video called “The Dream Still Lives” in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Dr. King’s assassination. It featured Barack and Michelle Obama, Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, and many others.
