The mid-1980s Honda Prelude “was found in 12.5 feet of water” near the southbound lane of Interstate 95 by Exit 74, the Sunshine State Sonar said.

A car that was submerged in a retention pond off a local highway has been found with possible human remains inside, according to authorities.

West Palm Beach Police said volunteers with Adventures with Purpose and the Sunshine State Sonar search team were searching local waterways for a person who went missing in the 1970s, according to CBS affiliate WPEC.

Crews located more than two dozen vehicles, including one that appeared to have human remains inside, Sunshine State Sonar said.

The mid-1980s Honda Prelude “was found in 12.5 feet of water” near the southbound lane of Interstate 95 by Exit 74 and “was about 30 to 40 feet from shore,” the organization added.

Divers discovered the remains inside the vehicle, which “showed signs indicative of a motor vehicle accident,” per the organization. The car was removed from the lake on Saturday.

Police are now investigating, and the medical examiner “took possession” of the remains, according to Sunshine State Sonar.

Diver Dave Yurkovich believes the car may have rolled due to some of the “unique” markings he saw on the vehicle, according to WPEC.

West Palm Beach Police Public Information Officer Mike Jachles said authorities don't know "how the car wound up in the water,” but believe it may have been “several decades ago," according to ABC affiliate WPBF.

“Is it possible could have traveled off of the interstate, whether it was accidental or intentional, or something else? That will all be part of the investigation,” Jachles added.

An identification card found in the car belongs to Demarzo Tisdale, who was 30 when he disappeared in 2005, according to ABC affiliate WPLG, citing sources.

Sunrise Police reportedly said the car found in the water was last registered in 2005 as well. The department did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

In the meantime, Jachels said the local medical examiner's office will “have an anthropologist look at the two small pieces that were found by these volunteer divers to determine whether or not they're human.”

An investigation into the discovery is ongoing.
