Car connoisseurs converge on Kerr Lake

Oct. 20—HENDERSON

Satterwhite Point looked like a 20th century car lot on a cool and cloudy Friday morning.

The Show, Shine, Shag and Dine pre-show was held there and then as dozens of car enthusiasts came from miles, or hundreds of miles, around to check out the classic cars on display.

The weather, for a moment, wasn't perfect. A few drops fell around noon, making some attendees nervous — though the dark gray clouds overhead soon passed over without incident. From then on, positivity was the rule. Classic tunes like Michael Jackson's "Billy Jean" and "Boogie Shoes," by KC and the Sunshine Band, played over speakers to provide some fitting background music.

Each auto had its own beauteous backdrop in the form of Kerr Lake's waters, which were a tad choppy that day due to the windy weather.

A lot of attendees were from out of state — like Steve Sadler, from Clarksville, Virginia, right across Kerr Lake.

Sadler joked that he shared a surname with Hermie and Elliott, two NASCAR drivers. He's not related. He brought a 1937 Chevrolet Business Coupe — its hood had two opened hatches on either side of the engine. With 400 horsepower, it can get 2,500 rotations per minute on the highway.

Sadler comes every year to enjoy the company of other car people.

Joseph and Reese Batson came all the way from Dover, Delaware upon invitation. They drove an 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass, an orange beaut with a little doll dressed up like a mechanic working on its front left tire. Jason made it for Reese as an act of love, but the additions have continued ever since. The addition of a stick shift made it a dealbreaker for Reese, she joked.

This is their first time coming to the SSSAD. "Beautiful" was how they described the scene, though it was unclear if they were talking about the lake, the cars on display or both.

The fun will continue at the SSSAD proper tomorrow, from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the corner of Breckenridge and Garnett streets.
