Captain Marvel joins reunited Avengers in latest 'Endgame' trailer

Having single-handedly ended the Kree-Skrull war, Captain Marvel just added another victory to her list of achievements: winning Thor’s approval. Not that Marvel’s reigning box-office champ needed to prove to us that she can stand toe-to-toe with Asgard’s notoriously petulant king and resident Thunder God (Chris Hemsworth). But Thor’s simple three-word sign-off — “I like her” — confirms Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) as the newest, and most powerful, member of the surviving team of Avengers as they seek to undo the Infinity War-ending Snapture in Avengers: Endgame. (Watch the new trailer above.) Captain Marvel’s importance to the “endgame” that Doctor Strange previously promised is further emphasized by Carol’s prominent placement on the latest poster, where she hovers above Captain America’s broad shoulders.

While Carol’s appearance points towards the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the bulk of this new Endgame trailer concerns itself with the past — particularly the long history shared by former Civil War adversaries Steve Rogers and Tony Stark (Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr.). The two-and-a-half minute spot opens with a wounded, deep space-stranded Tony reflecting on his maiden flight as Iron Man. “It feels like a thousand years ago,” he ruminates in a message obviously meant for Pepper Potts (Gwynneth Paltrow), who will be leaving the MCU one way or another after Endgame. “I fought may way out of that cave, became Iron Man, realized I loved you.” Those sentiments are predictably giving Twitter all the feels.

Cap is feeling equally nostalgic, with his mind drifting back to World War II and his transformation from a scrappy Brooklyn urchin to a stalwart American hero. He’s also found the time to shave off that Infinity War scruff, which is a shame for those of us hoping he’d become the next Jackson Maine after he hangs up his shield.

Speaking of “Shallow,” is it shallow of us to admit that we cheered the sight of Bradley Cooper’s Rocket Raccoon cocking his gun on the shoulder of Don Cheadle’s War Machine? No? OK, then. Glad we agree.

That said, this is the bispecial pairing that Twitter most wants to see in Endgame.

After “I like her,” the three most important words in the new Endgame trailer are “whatever it takes.” That’s the promise that the core Avengers make to themselves as they commit to un-dusting half of the Earth’s population. For Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), it will take adopting a dark new attitude (in the guise of Ronin) to presumably avenge his missing family. For Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), it will take watching one or more of her comrades fall. For Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), it will take finding a way to unleash his inner Hulk again. And for all of the heroes, it’ll take all-new uniforms designed for travel into Ant-Man’s favorite place, the Quantum Realm, where dangerous microbes and time vortexes dwell. On the plus side, Tony will definitely be back on Earth in time for that particular leg of their journey.

But wait! The team might also be headed into space. Last week, Disney shareholders got a sneak peek at a full Endgame scene that indicated that Rocket is loaning the Avengers his spaceship to head to the planet where Thanos is currently living out his retirement.

As if we weren’t sold before, this trailer confirms that we’ll be there opening day for Avengers: Endgame. Whatever it takes.
