The upcoming Marvel film Captain America: Brave New World is “10 times bigger” than the Disney+ series that teed it up, says Anthony Mackie.

Previewing his big-screen debut as Cap (currently due out Feb. 14, 2025), Mackie told EW.com, “One of the biggest conversations we had from the beginning was for this not to be Falcon and the Winter Soldier — Part 2, for this to be its own movie with its own story, with its own characters.”

Yet while Brave New World folds in big-screen characters such as Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, now played by Harrison Ford and holding the office of President of the United States, there will be at least two other familiar faces from Falcon and Winter Soldier — including Danny Ramirez as Joaquin Torres.

Surveying Sam Wilson’s dynamic with Joaquin versus previous two-handers, Mackie says, “We have more of a friendship as opposed to the way I admired Steve (Chris Evans) or the way I didn’t like Bucky (Sebastian Stan).”

Carl Lumbly will also reprise his FAWS role as Isaiah Bradley, a Super Soldier test subject from the 1950s.

The new Captain America movie was first teased in April 2021, with Falcon and Winter Soldier head writer Malcolm Spellman set to co-write the script with FAWS scribe Dalan Musson. Months later, it was officially announced that Mackie would reprise his role as Sam, who by the end of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier series had embraced his destiny as the new Cap.

The close of Falcon and Winter Soldier‘s April 2021 finale — in which Sam suited up as the newest Cap (Wardrobe by Wakanda) — teased some version of “more to come” when a title card in the series’ familiar font came up, rechristening the heroes’ tale as Captain America and the Winter Soldier.

Mackie describes Brave New World as, akin to Winter Soldier, “a grounded espionage action movie as opposed to aliens and airplanes coming through portals and s–t. Even though I’ve been in so many of them and have seen it all now, the opportunity for Sam to really establish himself as a true action star and Avenger comes with this movie.”
