Capricorn is the 10th sign of the zodiac, falling after Sagittarius and before Aquarius.

Out of the four elements (earth, fire, water and air), it is categorized as an earth sign. Earth signs are usually associated with more “grounded” character traits, such as being stable, logical and pragmatic.

According to astrologer and bestselling author Lisa Stardust, Capricorn is represented by the sea goat, "who is the cosmic lifeguard of the zodiac," she explains. “Capricorns have a serious demeanor because they are always looking out for others. But they do have a wild side when they're off duty and can let loose.”

While they are often thought to be too focused on money and power, Stardust says Capricorns are misunderstood in this way. “They are very different than that,” she says. “The sea goat likes to share the good life with those they care about. At the core, they're extremely kind-hearted and sincere.”

Stardust describes Capricorns as “hardworking, persistent, creative, honest, reflective, protective and sensitive.” Because they are earth signs, she adds, they “relish the material and physical world.”

She also notes that Capricorns are a “cardinal” sign, meaning that they initiate the start of a season. The start of Capricorn season coincides with the winter solstice.

The other cardinal signs are Aries (which marks the start of spring), Cancer (summer) and Libra (fall). Cardinal signs are associated with a sense of urgency or immediacy, and are said to be go-getters, trendsetters and innovators.

Which zodiac signs are most compatible with Capricorns?

According to Stardust, Capricorns relate to their fellow earth signs, Taurus and Virgo, on a “soulful and spiritual level” due to their shared practical and rational mindset.

They also tend to connect emotionally with Scorpios, she adds, “as they are both intuitive and have a tough exterior that hides their tender hearts.” The astrologer notes that these two signs also understand each others’ desire to succeed.

A surprisingly compatible sign for Capricorn is Gemini. Stardust says that these two signs get along “because they both get the need to hustle to achieve goals.”

Capricorns tend to butt heads with Aries, as both signs like to take charge.

“They're both cardinal signs, which makes them initiators and full of energy,” Stardust says. “Their vivacious attitude and desire to be the best can make them come off as bossy. When two domineering forces come together, it could lead to a frustrating connection.”

Another cardinal sign that Capricorns may clash with is Cancer. These signs also sit opposite each other on the zodiac wheel.

“Cancers are very emotionally open and Capricorns tend to hide their sentiments,” Stardust explains. “Their juxtaposing nature can be hard for the other to understand and relate to, which can create issues between them.”

How does Capricorn season affect Capricorns?

Because it is their solar return, Capricorn season is a chance for Capricorns to recharge their energy. However, Stardust notes that Mercury will be in retrograde from December 13 to January 1, “making Capricorns more sentimental than ever.”

“December 26’s full moon allows Capricorns super emotional and reflective,” she says.

During the retrograde, Capricorns should connect with old friends and exes as well as be prepared for travel plans falling through.

There are lots of famous Capricorns, but Stardust points to Dolly Parton, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Ryan Seacrest as the clearest embodiments of the sign.

“They are always creating, producing and working on different ventures, and appear to be very loyal to their crew,” she says. “Also, they can poke fun at themselves and have the laugh before anyone else does, which speaks to Capricorn's sarcastic demeanor and humor."
