Hi folks — Eric Williams from the Cape Cod Times here, the chief dreamer and schemer behind our weekly Curious Cape Cod feature. I roam around the Cape with my trusty Curious Prius, seeking out cool hikes, giant rocks, storm damage and odd nuggets of history. Sometimes I touch on vital issues like when to turn off the outdoor shower and where to get the best beef jerky.

Hiking reward: Mysterious trail leads to awesome ocean vista in Truro

I started working my way east on the Truro trails and eventually arrived at a spectacular overlook on the Atlantic Ocean, high above the beach.
I started working my way east on the Truro trails and eventually arrived at a spectacular overlook on the Atlantic Ocean, high above the beach.

TRURO — I was checking out the damage from a sneaky frost that rolled in before dawn. Sure, I should have been crunching weather data the night before, but I got sucked into the "Great British Baking Show" and hypnotized by the eggy goodness of Custard Week.

A man without a tribe: The true story of Squanto

A statue of Massasoit stands on Cole's Hill, in Plymouth.

Tisquantum, known commonly as Squanto, spoke fluent English after he was kidnapped and taken to Europe. He lived with the Pilgrims.

His is such a seminal backstory to Plimoth Colony that the lack of historical reference to it is conspicuous. While Squanto avoided the Great Dying — an epidemic from 1616 to 1619 that wiped out tens of thousands of Natives from Maine to Cape Cod — his life was nonetheless tragic.

The process to opening a recreational cannabis shop in Cambridge has proven to be quite difficult, even without considering pandemic holdups.
The process to opening a recreational cannabis shop in Cambridge has proven to be quite difficult, even without considering pandemic holdups.

Over the last month, at least eight open positions have been advertised at the state government office that implements and enforces the laws and regulations of both the adult-use and medical marijuana markets. The commission oversees everything from stores, to cultivators, to delivery businesses, as well as equity programs aimed at ensuring industry participation by communities disproportionately harmed by marijuana law enforcement.

It's out there: Top 5 odd things in the Cape Cod woods

There’s a wicked long tunnel--at least 100 feet--running under Route 25 in Bourne. I made it through in 2014. Seems the tunnel was put in place to provide a passageway under the highway for wildlife.
There’s a wicked long tunnel--at least 100 feet--running under Route 25 in Bourne. I made it through in 2014. Seems the tunnel was put in place to provide a passageway under the highway for wildlife.

I can't stay out of the woods. It's been that way since I was a little kid, building forts and searching for giant rocks. Even finding an old beer bottle was a thrill, as I imagined people of yore slugging down suds and perhaps planning to battle werewolves or Bigfoot. Anything was possible out there!

Investigating the paranormal: Ghost hunter shares haunted tales of Cape Cod

BARNSTABLE — Latches lifting, knobs turning, and doors opening and closing by themselves. Footsteps on creaking floors polished smooth from centuries of use. Unseen fingers teasing your hair, tugging at your clothes, brushing the nape of your neck. Misty apparitions drifting across a road, or congealing from the fog on a beach. Shifting patches of darkness within the dark of night, and disembodied voices whispering, calling out, issuing warnings.

🔒 When should you turn off your outdoor shower on Cape Cod? A plumber pipes in

Eric Williams: Curious Cape Cod

I was leafing through the latest issue of "Today's Loofah," the magazine for stylish exfoliators, when a raven landed on the windowsill and ominously asked, "When do you turn off your outdoor shower?"

"Nevermore," I replied. "I'm going to run that puppy all year long. I will rinse and repeat through blizzards and nor'easters. I will shower outside on Christmas Eve and New Year's Day. It's my happy place!"

The raven flew away, cackling something that sounded like "frozen pipes, frozen pipes."
