A huge congrats may be in order! On Monday morning, news broke that Rooney Mara is reportedly pregnant — expecting her first child with her Oscar-winning fiancé Joaquin Phoenix. The famously private couple has been lying low at their home in Los Angeles throughout the pandemic and hasn’t yet commented on any baby news. But sources insist Mara is going to be a mama, possibly in just a few months’ time.
Page Six reported the news and while reps for both Mara and Phoenix have refused multiple requests for comment on the subject their sources claim Mara “may be as far as six months along in her pregnancy.” The outlet points to recent photos of Mara wearing baggy clothes while celebrating Mother’s Day last week suggesting she’s been covering up a baby bump.

If Mara and Phoenix are expecting, it’s obviously exciting news for a multitude of reasons. There are two reasons in particular, though, that we’re admittedly looking forward to finding out what the creative couple is going to name their offspring (move over, X Æ A-12 Musk), and seeing adorable baby-cousin-playdate-pics. Mara’s older sis, actress Kate Mara, and husband Jamie Bell welcomed their first child last May. Phoenix also has nieces and nephews from his siblings, including sister Summer’s two children with ex Casey Affleck.
Mara and Phoenix first met on the set of Spike Jonze’s Her, but he mistakenly assumed she despised him before realizing she was just shy, too. “She’s the only girl I ever looked up on the internet,” he told Vanity Fair in October 2019. “We were just friends, email friends. I’ve never done that. Never looked up a girl online.”
That clearly worked out well for Phoenix, seeing as he and Mara got engaged last July. And, if Page Six’s sources pan out, they’ll soon be tackling the joint role of parenthood together. Congrats (tentatively) to the happy couple!
