Cannon Beach update: Here's what's coming to the surf park in Mesa and when it might open

As a surfing destination in Mesa is under construction, the mixed-use venue it's part of has solidified several dining and personal care destinations that will be part of the Cannon Beach development.

The 37-acre venue at Power and Warner roads, which has been under construction since mid-2021, will be home to a hotel, co-working space, salons and spas, an “indoor action sports playground” and restaurants. At the center of the site is the 1.89-acre Revel Surf wave lagoon.

Developers have a goal of opening Revel Surf by the fourth quarter of 2023, though the timeline is not firm. Some amenities, such as the hotel, will open at a later date.

Coming to Cannon Beach: ‘Action sports center,’ restaurants and more

KTR, which calls itself the ultimate indoor sports playground, will offer a parkour course, trampolines, BMX bikes, scooters, a skate park and “high-flying aerialist attractions,” according to a press release.

Bordering the lagoon will be a restaurant row where four full-service restaurants, including second-story dining areas, are planned. City records show that a permit for Cannon Beach Revel Surf Beach Grill is under review.

Cole Cannon, the founder of the Cannon Beach, told The Arizona Republic via a representative that a number of fast-casual eateries plan to open on the premises, including:

• Moku Hawaiian Grill.

• A booze-and-breakfast brunch concept.

• Wow Wow Hawaiian Lemonade.

• It’s Boba Time.

• Two Hands Cannon Beach.

• JL Hot Pot & Grill.

• BubbaKoo’s Burritos.

• Creekside Tacos.

• Surf City Sandwich.

Panda Nails and Ananda Salon — an Aveda-based hair salon — are also confirmed tenants. Cannon also said Cannon Beach is in discussions with three med spas that will offer hair, massage, sculpting and cosmetic injection services. A salon suites concept based in Scottsdale is also in negotiations.

The development project is committed to partnering with Arizona-based businesses, according to Cannon.

“At the core of our identity is the aspiration to be the homegrown Arizona beach filled with regional food and service talent,” he said in a statement to The Republic. “This commitment has come at the cost of declining national brands, but we promise an amazing vibe at Cannon Beach.”

What to know about Revel Surf, Cannon Beach's wave pool

The wave pool at the center of Cannon Beach promises “some of the most epic and diverse waves for every level of surfer,” according to the project’s website.

The wave pool technology, Swell Manufacturing, “can provide an endless combination of wave variations, from shorter waves with large punchy barrels to long, drawn-out peeling lefts and rights, and everything in between.”

There will be a surf pool next to the lagoon where experts and beginners alike can take advantage of endless waves.

According to The Republic’s previous reporting, Cannon Beach will source its water from a well that has been at the site since the 1950s. City documents show that the lagoon is expected to use less than 25 acre-feet of water — about 8 million gallons — per year, which is equal to about what 75 households use in Arizona per year, according to the Arizona Department of Water Resources.

Cannon told Phoenix Business Journal that he has added a cliff-diving lagoon with a 17-foot-deep pool and platforms that range from 6 to 26 feet tall.
