Cannes Film Festival 2024: See the Best Red-Carpet Looks

The Cannes Film Festival 2024 red carpet is officially underway, and as always, celebrities like Greta Gerwig and Meryl Streep have packed their festival finest.

The festival attendees are typically a mix of American and international celebrities and filmmakers, as well as models—the Croisette has become one of the most esteemed catwalks in all of France in recent years, a place for designers to showcase couture that may have otherwise been tucked away in the archives.

In 2023 several of our favorite red-carpet looks of the year were plucked from the Cannes red carpet, including Elsa Hosk’s deconstructed Viktor & Rolf couture gown and Elle Fanning’s stunning silver Paco Rabanne dress with its tinsel-like paillettes.

The festival, rather infamously, also has a strict dress code, which has been the subject of scrutiny since 2015, when it was reported that some women were turned away from a screening for not wearing heels. Several actors, including Julia Roberts and Kristen Stewart, have removed their heels on the red carpet in protest.

As of 2024 the official Cannes Film Festival dress code reads:

“To attend the Gala screenings, a dinner jacket (tuxedo) with a bow tie or evening dress is required. In the absence of this, you may wear a cocktail dress, a dark trouser suit, a dressy top with black trousers, a black dress, a black or midnight blue suit with a bow tie…. Elegant shoes, with or without heels, are required. Trainers are forbidden.”

The Cannes red carpet ranks just behind the Met Gala and just ahead of the Oscars in terms of the caliber of style that guests are expected to observe. This is the time for couture. This is the occasion for over-the-top glam. And if you’re Jennifer Lawrence, this could also be the time for thong sandals (if you can get away with them).
