In November 2022, Candace Cameron Bure sparked a fury of outrage for her Wall Street Journal interview where she explained why she exited her Hallmark channel contract for Great American Family (GAF). As the chief content officer at the streaming network, she claimed that they would only feature couples in a “traditional marriage” — and that’s when all hell broke loose on the internet.

Over a year later, those controversial comments are still being felt at Hallmark, and some of their biggest stars from the 2022 hit film, Three Wise Men and a Baby, spoke out to Vulture. When the trio of actors, Andrew Walker, Tyler Hynes, and Paul Campbell were asked to comment on Bure’s thoughts, it’s clear that they don’t align with her beliefs whatsoever.

Hynes explained for all three of them that the “diversity of storytelling” is exactly the reason why they are loyal to the Hallmark brand, noting that “things have to evolve” in Hollywood. Walker believes that “Hallmark has created a culture that’s a trickle-down effect from the top.” He credits new executive vice president of programming, Lisa Hamilton Daly, for embracing those changes after former chief Bill Abbott left to go run GAF.

Campbell also pointed out that “viewership is up” at the Hallmark channel, so they are doing something right because the audience is responding to the variety of perspectives on the network. And while “there’s a lot of space for people to produce and tell similar stories,” he proudly praised the network, adding, “Hallmark is the only place that does specifically what Hallmark does.”

Bure’s controversial LGBTQ+ stance might even be causing a bit of friction over at GAF because Abbott pushed back on her Wall Street Journal comments this fall to Variety. ”I think that when it comes down to all of our own personal feelings on this topic and how we see the world, we try and separate that as much as possible from the business point of view.”

When Abbott was asked to clarify whether he is OK with her less-than-inclusive LGBTQ+ views, the cracks started to show. “But when she speaks on that [her LGBTQ+ beliefs], she’s not speaking on behalf of Great American Media.” Bure is probably find she is in the minority on this topic as viewers push for more-inclusive stories, which is going to make her job as a chief content officer a very challenging one.
