Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival Day 2 Highlights: Erykah Badu, Earl Sweatshirt, Rae Sremmurd & More

On Sunday (Nov. 13), Tyler, the Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival concluded its fifth consecutive year, topping off another fun-filled weekend with a broad set of artists and tons of surprises, from the reunited EarlWolf (Tyler, the Creator and Earl Sweatshirt) to Erykah Badu’s unforgettable performance of neo-soul.

Unfortunately for fans of Sleigh Bells, the Brooklyn duo had to cancel their afternoon performance due to vocalist Alexis Krauss’ laryngitis. “We badly wanted to play but Alexis’ laryngitis has gotten worse she can’t sing or even talk,” the band shared via Twitter. They promised to return to Los Angeles to make it up to their fans.

Aside from that minor setback to Tyler’s curated line-up, Day Two of Flog Gnaw produced just as many concert memories as Saturday. Revisit the highlights below.

Kali Uchis and Phony Ppl Perform “Ridin Round” With Some Help

On a seasonably hot day in L.A., Columbian-American singer Kali Uchis, backed by hip-hop collective Phony Ppl, enlivened the crowd with her breezy tunes and pop-friendly slow jams. With her powerful, smoky voice, she shared a new song from her untitled album, and performed selections from her sultry Por Vida EP (“Know What I Want,” “What They Say,” “Loner”). For her current single “Ridin’ Round,” she and Phony Ppl picked one lucky fan from the crowd to perform it together. In front of packed crowd, the girl was visibly nervous and forgot some of the words, but her friend came to rescue her, saving her and earning some well-deserved cheers.

Taco Brings Out Dillon Francis and Vince Staples as Special Guests

Flog Gnaw attendees saw an evening slot on the Flog Stage described as “Taco & Special Guest.” As Tyler and Odd Future’s resident DJ spun a variety of turn-up anthems (Three 6 Mafia’s “Slob On My Knob”; Future’s “Sh!t”), Taco surfaced and brought along his DJ homie Dillon Francis to take the energy to the next level. Vince Staples, a Long Beach legend in-the-making, ended the set with a passionate show of hometown price in Summertime ’06 single “Norf Norf.”

Anderson .Paak Proves He’s a Must-See Festival Act

Anderson .Paak and the Free Nationals will go down in 2016 as the year’s must-see live act. The charismatic AP ran through a set list of Venice and Malibu songs, which had well-known favorites like “Drugs,” “Come Down,” “Heart Don’t Stand a Chance” and “The Bird.” Paak and Domo Genesis reunited for their bright tune “Dapper,” and the rapper/singer saved a major guest for last: Mac Miller. The pair worked off each other’s energy and performed a near-perfect rendition of “Dang!” that had both artists smiling.

Rae Sremmurd Does a Camp Flog Gnaw Edition of the #MannequinChallenge

Billed as the Sremmlife Crew (Swae Lee, Slim Jxmmi, Riff 3X, Bo Bo Swae, and Impxct), the collective’s high-powered set fittingly began with “Start a Party,” gradually getting more intense with SremmLife bangers “No Flex Zone” and “Look Alive” as the night went on. When it came time for “Black Beatles,” a viral hit that became the unofficial soundtrack for the Mannequin Challenge and officially topped the charts this week, the brothers couldn’t leave the stage without doing a crazy Flog Gnaw edition.

Erykah Badu Brings Interstellar Jams

For the final hours of Flog Gnaw, Erykah Badu emerged from the darkness with her red top hat and full band. “Out My Mind, Just in Time,” “Otherside of the Game,” “Gone Baby Don’t Be Long” and “I’ll Call U Back” were just a few gems that the queen of space-funk performed, but in true Badu fashion, the singer addressed the people with a message, in light of Donald Trump winning the election and setting off mass protests occurring across the country:

“No matter what you believe with the powers that be, belief will affect you,” she offered before saying farewell. “So pay attention. See, because when the sideshow going on and shit, trust me — some other shit is going down somewhere else that they don’t want us to see.”

She continued, “I believe that Donald Trump preyed on the lower common denominator to win the presidency. In fact, I don’t believe in none of that shit, really… A lot of people are protesting and marching and angry. It’s because people are woke. They’re seeing that this shit don’t work. Really, people asking me, ‘Why are they protesting, Badu? Why they mad?’ We don’t know why really, but it’s going to come to us. And I guarantee you, when you’re following and marching, please don’t follow a bunch of mad motherf–kers nowhere, ’cause that’s not going to get us nowhere. We have to be smart, strategic, and woke.”

Earl Sweatshirt and Tyler, the Creator Reunite as EarlWolf

There were several rumors going around Sunday about the TBA slot on the bill before ScHoolboy Q’s finale. Some believed it was an extended set for Badu, while others thought that Frank Ocean would bless the Camp stage by performing songs from Endless and Blonde. The wait was finally over when the surprise ended up being Earl and Tyler reuniting as EarlWolf. With the EarlWolf logo (a pencil drawing of their two faces combined) as their backdrop, the two performed early songs of theirs, such as Earl’s “Couch” and “Drop” from OFWGKA’s Radical.

The two joined forces for “Lemonade,” one of their best collaborations as a duo, and did “Rusty” with Domo Genesis. Funny enough, Tyler forgot one of his verses to the song, so he kicked a 12-bar freestyle right on the spot. At the end, he performed an energetic “DEATHCAMP” that had fans jumping and piling on each other, a perfect way to send the crowd off to Q.

Tyler Enjoys Some Rides With Fans During ScHoolboy Q’s Closing Set

Most of the crowd were watching Q perform songs from Oxymoron and Blank Face LP, but host Tyler, the Creator had other plans. Once Q hit the stage, he made his way through the crowd and walked straight to the carnival’s Star Dancer ride, with throngs of fans running to catch up and take photos. Tyler, Taco, and Lionel Boyce (aka L-Boy) rode the Star Dancer a few times with a group of lucky fans. A girl watching nearby says Tyler did the same thing on Saturday near the Zipper. Tyler’s a man of the people.
