They were friends for a number of years, even collaborating on songs together, and always saying kind things about each other. It was clear to many fans that Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes should be dating, and many shipped the two, hoping to see it in real life.
Finally, in 2019, fans collectively sighed in happiness that the duo finally entered into a relationship with tons of PDA, including sloppy kisses at parties, outside, on balconies, on Instagram, and anywhere else you could possibly think of.
Friends Or Something More?
The two met way back in 2014 on Austin Mahone's tour. They both did an interview with V Magazine reminiscing on that time with Camila saying, “I remember thinking we met on the Austin Mahone tour, and I remember I wanted to hang out with you, but you were always on the tour bus, just learning guitar."
Shawn replied, saying of Camila, "And I thought you were out of your mind. I’d be in my bus where no one could see me. I’d be looking through the window and I’d see you, like, flying around on a scooter and jumping and doing cartwheels. I’d be like, 'she’s insane,' close the window and go to sleep.”
So, apparently things started out pretty awkwardly for these two!
Collaborating On Music
By November 2015, they were collaborating on music together and released their song, "I Know What You Did Last Summer." Of course, this sent the rumor mill spinning, however still nothing seemed to be happening between the two, at least in public.
They sent fans into even further meltdown when they posted a video of themselves covering Ed Sheeran's song "Kiss Me." Still, it felt like watching a "will they or won't they" story line on one of our favorite t.v. shows.
Camila Was Dating A Relationship Expert
First spotted on a beach together in 2018, Camila got together with dating and relationship expert Matthew Hussey. Those who shipped Shawn and Camila were left heart broken.
Matthew Hussey is a British dating expert who has written multiple books on the subject, like Get the Guy: Learn Secrets of the Male Mind. Snagging an actual relationship expert seems like the dream of every woman, but the two split 18 months later and Camila was left single, though it wouldn't be for long.
There Was A Connection Long Before They Got Together
In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Camila let some details of her relationship with Shawn slip. She even spoke about what many already assumed, that the two had a crush on each other way back when they were just friends and worked together in 2015.
She told the publication, "It was this awkward thing where we both liked each other, but we weren't together. It was weird."
She continued, "During 'I Know What You Did Last Summer', I really bonded with him as more than a friend."
As with many friendships between men and women, the timing was still not right. She said, "'I think he did, too, but we were both really young, and he was experiencing the pressures of his career. I don't think we knew what to do with those feelings. It was this awkward thing where we both liked each other, but we weren't together. It was just weird."
Their steamy connection while filming their music video for "Senorita" seemed to be what finally pushed the two together. Camila broke up with Matthew Hussey around the same time, and she was spotted with Shawn just a month later.
