Cameron Diaz keeps her private life off the radar as best she can, but her latest appearance may have given fans quite a bit of insight into her marriage to Benji Madden. She jumped into the “sleep divorce” conversation by offering her opinion about keeping separate bedrooms as a married adult.

“Sleep divorce” might seem like a recent trend, but it’s gained popularity among couples whose marriage is solid, but they are just looking for a good night’s sleep. Sometimes a partner snores and the other is a light sleeper, or one person prefers the AC blasting while the other wants a toasty room. It’s not a new concept, but the public discussion of it certainly is.

That’s where Diaz entered the chat on the Lipstick on the Rim podcast, hosted by Molly Sims and Emese Gormley. The 51-year-old star revealed gave her thoughts on the hot topic, telling the hosts, “We should normalize separate bedrooms,To me, I would literally, I have my house, you have yours. We have the family house in the middle. I will go and sleep in my room. You go sleep in your room. I’m fine. And we have the bedroom in the middle that we can convene in for our relations.”

Sims warned her about the possible “bad headlines” with her admission, even though celebrities have admitted that separate bedrooms makes for a happier home. Gwyneth Paltrow didn’t even live with husband Brad Falchuk until a year into her marriage. They worked with an intimacy therapist who recommended the practice. Paltrow revealed to Harper’s Bazaar that it helped with “preserving mystery and also preserving the idea that this person has their own life.” She even joked that their sex life took a bit of a toll once they moved in together permanently — a common marital pitfall. “So this is something I’m trying to remain aware of now as we merge together,” she said.

On the podcast, Diaz did walk back a bit from her very confident statement about “sleep divorce,” without confirming that the arrangement is her and Madden’s preference at home. She went on to reassure the women that her eight-year marriage is a happy one and her “husband is so wonderful.” A good night’s sleep is an important part of good health and a blissful romance, so if separate bedrooms accomplishes that mission — it’s a win.
