There are clearly unresolved feelings between former Roc-A-Fella founders JAY-Z and Dame Dash, but the latter is often viewed as the one who truly can’t let things go. Cam’ron recently stood up for the entrepreneur and dispelled the narrative that he is always talking about Hov.

“You get all these soundbites about ‘Dame gotta stop talking about JAY-Z,’ ‘He’s always talking about Jay-Z,’ ‘Why he talking about JAY-Z?'” the Harlem rapper said on the latest episode of It Is What It Is. “You asked him about JAY-Z! He ain’t just getting up there and talking about JAY-Z this and JAY-Z that.”

Killa Cam’s assessment is accurate. In this era of soundbites, clips, and reels, creators and aggregators often just show the answer to a question and not the question that was asked. So, it appears as if Dame is always bringing up the Brooklyn rapper as opposed to being asked questions about him. Now, while Dame Dash isn’t at fault for JAY-Z coming up every time he does an interview, he isn’t completely devoid of any blame in their falling out and subsequent jabs at one another. Steve Stoute recently spoke about Dash’s personality and why it drove people away.

“The way he spoke to people, the way he treated people. He was angry,” Stoute told Shannon Sharpe on a March episode of Club Shay Shay. “He was angry because he had a strong perspective about his business philosophy […] People were becoming less beholden to him […] While he was ‘building businesses,’ which partly he was, he would go off all around the world with cameras and girls and all kinds of crazy sh*t and then come back flipping on everybody.”

Stoute claimed that the 4:44 rapper saw the writing on the wall and chose to bet on himself. “Jay seen Dame’s ceiling,” he said. “He wanted more. And everybody wanted more. Dame just had a very particular way of approaching it. He’s far from stupid. Very very very smart. Very talented. Ego through the roof. Through the roof! So, there was no working with him. No one wanted to work with him. As much talent as he has, nobody [wants] to work with him.”

Despite being estranged, JAY-Z still advocated on Dame Dash’s behalf recently. The record executive was ordered to sell his remaining Roc-A-Fella shares in February to clear an $823k debt. The debt came from Josh Webber suing Dame for defamation and copyright infringement in connection to the 2016 film Dear Frank.

Webber won the case in 2022, but Dash hadn’t paid the debt by the time he was ordered to use his Roc shares to do so. Hov and Kareem “Biggs” Burke attempted to intervene on his behalf, but their efforts were futile and Dash gave up his one-third of the disbanded label.
