Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore star Callum Turner goes on an epic quest for Olympic gold in the trailer for director George Clooney’s The Boys in the Boat, which Amazon MGM Studios dropped on Wednesday ahead of a Dec. 25 theatrical release.

Turner plays Joe Rantz, a Depression-era outsider who discovers joining the rowing team in college will assure him of job and housing. “We rowed out of need. The need to stay in school, the need to eat, to sleep,” an older Rantz says in a voice-over that recounts the underdog rowing team beating powerhouses like Harvard and Yale on their way to triumphing over host Nazi Germany at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin.

Based on the book The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics by Daniel James Brown, Joel Edgerton stars as a demanding Coach Ulbrickson, who pushes his eight-man team to the limits of their abilities as they overcome personal and physical hardship.

“Everyone tires and they just get stronger,” Ulbrickson marvels at his rowing squad in the inspirational trailer set to the Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ 1989 single “I Won’t Back Down.”

The film’s ensemble cast includes Jack Mulhern, Sam Strike, Peter Guinness, Alec Newman, Luke Slattery, Thomas Elms, Tom Varey and Bruce Herbelin-Earle, and Smokehouse and Spyglass Media share producer credits.

Clooney helmed the Boys in the Boat based on a script adaptation by Mark L. Smith.
