Call the Midwife fans are in for an emotional Christmas as the seasonal special will see two main characters depart the show.

The feature length special which is expected to air on Christmas Day, will see the departure of Sister Hilda and Sister Frances.

Hilda, played by Fenella Woolgar, will have already bid goodbye to Poplar by the time of the Christmas special as she has been called back to the Mother House convent led by Miriam Margoyles, who portrays Mildred.

During the course of the special, Sister Frances (Ella Bruccoleri) will get into a nasty bike accident during a storm and is also sent back to the Mother House convent.

While these two characters will be leaving the much-loved period drama, the Christmas special will also see the return of a fan favourite in the form of Trixie Franklin, played by Helen George.

George was thought to have left the show in its most recent season which was filmed shortly after she gave birth to her second child.

As Call the Midwife has always done, the Christmas special will include historical events in the show with the thalidomide scandal set to feature in the plot.

The thalidomide scandal is considered the "biggest man-made medical disaster ever" after 10,000 children were born with a range of deformities.

Thalidomide was a drug given to pregnant women to help with morning sickness but was later proved to cause birth defects and miscarriages.

It was also recently confirmed that Call the Midwife has been commissioned for a twelfth and thirteenth season, set to air in 2023 and 2024.

Series creator Heidi Thomas said of the renewal: “We are thrilled to be going on for a few more years! Like Nonnatus House itself, we have a proud past but an even more exciting future – full of old favourites, fresh faces, higher hemlines, new ideas.”
