‘Call Me by Your Name’ Wins Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay
“Call Me by Your Name” won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. Based on the beloved novel by André Aciman and adapted for the screen by the legendary 89-year-old screenwriter James Ivory (now the oldest winner of a competitive Oscar in history), “Call Me by Your Name” was the only nominee in its category to also be in contention for Best Picture.
Accepting the award, Ivory began with a shoutout to Aciman: “My rule number one for a screenwriter who adapts a novel is first thanking the author.” Ivory called “Call Me by Your Name” a “story familiar to most of us… whether we’re straight or gay or somewhere in between, we’ve all gone through first love and come out the other side somewhat intact.” Ivory finished out his speech by thanking his late professional collaborators, and “our sensitive and sensible director, Luca Guagagnino.”
This is James Ivory’s fourth Oscar nomination, and his first win. His previous nods were all in the Best Director category.

The other nominees in the category were Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber for “The Disaster Artist,” Scott Frank, James Mangold, and Michael Green for “Logan,” Aaron Sorkin for “Molly’s Game,” and Virgil Williams and Dee Rees for “Mudbound.”
The 90th Academy Awards were held on March 4th at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, and were hosted by Jimmy Kimmel.
