‘Call The Midwife’ Renewed For Three Seasons By BBC One

Three more seasons of Call The Midwife and three Christmas specials have been ordered by BBC One. The award-winning drama will deliver eight episodes each for Seasons 7, 8 and 9, with the holiday specials tacked on as the nuns and midwives of Nonnatus House move into the 1960s.

Made by Neal Street Productions for BBC One, Call The Midwife airs on PBS Stateside. In Britain, it’s been one of the UK’s most popular dramas since launching in 2012 and remains the most-watched drama in the UK, with all five seasons to date attracting about 10M viewers or more per episode. The story centers on a group of nurse midwives working in the East End of London.

Season 6 begins airing in early 2017. Creator Heidi Thomas continues to lead the writing team with Pippa Harris as executive producer for Neal Street. Executive producer for the BBC is Elizabeth Kilgarriff.

Talking about moving the story forward, Thomas says, “Britain was a country fizzing with change and challenge, and there is so much rich material — medical, social, and emotional — to be explored. We have now delivered well over one hundred babies on screen, and like those babies, the stories keep on coming! Above all else, it is an incredible privilege to work on a show that is made with such care, and received with such love.”

Harris says the BBC has been a “truly supportive parent” with the hefty renewal demonstrating their “care and commitment.” She also calls it a testament “to the passion, skill and creativity of Heidi Thomas, and to the dedication, talent and brilliance of our cast and crew.”

This year’s Christmas special airs on BBC One on December 25. The story will see the residents of Nonnatus House transported to the eastern cape of South Africa. After receiving an SOS call from Hope Clinic, a tiny mission hospital which is understaffed, underfunded, and with a poor water supply, they soon learn that the struggling clinic is faced with closure.
