Calista Flockhart Hints That the 'Ally McBeal' Emmys Appearance Isn’t the Only Reunion in the Works
Calista Flockhart seems to be everywhere these days. After making the promotional rounds with husband Harrison Ford last year for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, she also turned up at the Primetime Emmys with a much-discussed reunion with some of her former Ally McBeal costars. That nostalgic event might not be a one-time thing either.
The 59-year-old actress revealed that there is potential for Ally McBeal to be revived in some form. “I think there are some people talking about a reboot, but I don’t know much about it,” she told Entertainment Tonight on Tuesday. Flockhart might not be chatting with show creator David E. Kelley just yet, but she gave a pretty confident answer that she’s up for the challenge. “Sure, I’m always game,” she added. And without her participation, there really is no Ally McBeal.

The show, which premiered in 1997, became a cultural touchstone for hitting on hot topics facing career women from love to starting a family — but it was often done with unexpected fantasy sequences and musical numbers. Flockhart shared why she loved the character so much to The Hollywood Reporter in 2017 when the show was celebrating its 20th anniversary. “One of the things I thought was so special about Ally was that she was not an ingénue; she was idiosyncratic, eccentric, intelligent, a work in progress. And she was opinionated, whether she was right or wrong,” she explained. “She was an oddball just like everybody else.”
The role led to three Emmy nominations for Flockhart, but it also led to a lot of criticism around her personal appearance. The long hours on set took their toll and the cast felt the tremendous pressure, especially Flockhart who was in almost every scene at the titular character.
“There was a turning point when the fame of Calista became bigger than what the fame of the show was,” her costar Jane Krakowski, who played office assistant Elaine Vassal on the Fox show. “We’d had a honeymoon period where people focused on the creative intent. Then more and more articles were written about the length of her skirts or her weight or her effect on feminism. People became more interested in those outside stories than the show itself, but we always felt very protective of Calista.”
Despite the controversies, Flockhart seems more than game to tackle the role again, and that Emmys reunion was just a taste of what is possibly to come.
