Miley Cyrus & Neil Young Lose Houses In California Wildfires, Guillermo Del Toro’s Bleak House Survives – Update
UPDATE, SUNDAY 10 PM: Miley Cyrus and Neil Young became the latest celebrities to reveal that their homes had been destroyed by the Southern California wildfires.
“Completely devastated by the fires affecting my community,” Cyrus wrote on Twitter Sunday night. “I am one of the lucky ones. My animals and LOVE OF MY LIFE made it out safely & that’s all that matters right now. My house no longer stands but the memories shared with family & friends stand strong. I am grateful for all I have,” Cyrus said before thanking firefighters and LA Country’s Sheriff’s department and urging people to donate. (read her entire tweets below.)
In a post on his Archives site Young blasted President Donald Trump’s reaction in which the President put the blame for the fires on “gross mismanagement” of California’s forests.
“California is vulnerable – not because of poor forest management as DT (our so-called president) would have us think,” Young wrote. “As a matter of fact this is not a forest fire that rages on as I write this. We are vulnerable because of Climate Change; the extreme weather events and our extended drought is part of it.”
Added Young who had a home near Malibu, “Firefighters have never seen anything like this in their lives. I have heard that said countless times in the past two days, and I have lost my home before to a California fire, now another.”

Guillermo del Toro had much better news to share, saying he was told his memorabilia-stuffed Bleak House has survived. “Bleak House (I am told this morning) seems to be fine,” he tweeted. “Just minor smoke damage. I am aware about how much this fire has taken, how much has been lost- this is humbling and a blessing.” Bleak House holds the director’s vast horror-related collection, including more than 700 pieces of original art, life-size wax recreations of Hollywood horror characters, Alfred Hitchcock memorabilia, and various movie props.

“Sadly my house couldn’t be saved,” she wrote. “The courageous firefighters were able to save my cars and personal items recovered from my home.” She went on to thank the firemen that helped her saying, “I’m grateful for all of their hard work trying to save my home. Sad we lost our home but grateful that my family is safe. Luckily we quickly evacuated our house yesterday after a patrol car drove up the street announcing mandatory evacuations. I’m grateful for my lovely neighbors and friends who kept me informed and for their help this evening.”
UPDATE, SUNDAY 9 AM: Actress Shannen Doherty is among the celebrities whose homes were believed threatened. Doherty was out of town when the fire broke, but reported online that people staying at her Malibu home evacuated safely with her dogs. She expressed thanks to firefighters and sympathy for others suffering displacement from the fires.
Actress Alyssa Milano updated that her house was not burned. She had previously tweeted that the structure was “in jeopardy,” but that her children and horses had been safely secured. “My house is still standing. I’m on my way to bring firefighters water and food,” she tweeted.
Cher also updated her home’s status, apparently watching the conflagration on television as she prepared for a performance.
