California Daycare Pool Drowning Victims Identified as 1-Year-Old Girls as Investigation Continues

The Santa Clara District Attorney's Office tells PEOPLE that they are "reviewing the case"

Authorities have identified the two children who died after falling into a California daycare pool on Monday as officials say several investigations into the incident remain ongoing.

The Santa Clara County Coroner has identified the victims as Lillian Hanan of San Jose and Payton Cobb of Hollister, both 1, according to NBC affiliate KNTV-TV, ABC affiliate KABC-TV and The Mercury News.

The two children died at a hospital after they were found in a pool at the Happy Happy Daycare in San Jose. A third child found with the pair was also taken to a hospital and survived.

"Officers at that time did respond to a welfare check and jointly responded with San Jose Fire Department to investigate a call of several children in a pool," San Jose Police Officer Steve Aponte said Tuesday, per KNTV-TV. "Upon arrival, we discovered that two of the children were in severe medical distress. A third one was also located in the pool. All three were transported to local hospitals."

The San Jose Police Department and the Santa Clara County Coroner's Office did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's requests for comment.

Aponte told KABC-TV and The Mercury News that the call was the "worst that a parent can receive" and that the department is investigating.

The Department of Family and Children's Services is also investigating, KABC-TV reported. A spokesperson for the Santa Clara District Attorney's Office tells PEOPLE that they are "reviewing the case."

It remains unclear how many adults were at the facility when the drownings unfolded, how many children were in the pool or how they ended up in the water.

The home daycare is located on Fleetwood Drive in the city's Almaden neighborhood, the Department of Social Services said, per KABC-TV. Their license reportedly listed the pool as an "off limits" area.

The daycare did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.

Chuey Anima, who lives in the neighborhood, told CW affiliate KRON-TV that the incident has spooked him and that he wouldn't send his own kids to the daycare.

“If they had a pool that would be something I’d worry about," he added.
