Caleb Love leaving UNC, entering transfer portal

The North Carolina Tar Heels have another departure from the 2022-23 roster.

On Monday, guard Caleb Love announced his intentions to leave the program and enter the transfer portal. He becomes the sixth UNC player to exit the program, joining Justin McKoy, Tyler Nickel, Puff Johnson, Dontrez Styles and Will Shaver.

Love spent three seasons at North Carolina after committing as a five-star prospect in the 2020 class. Love picked North Carolina over offers from Missouri, Arizona, Kansas, Illinois and Indiana among others. The guard started on the first day of his freshman season alongside fellow recruit R.J. Davis, and the two have held down the guard spots since.

As time went on, Love struggled with consistency, including this season in which he averaged 16.7 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game while shooting 37.8% from the floor.

Love did hit what is considered one of the biggest shots in program history during the 2022 Final Four. His 3-pointer over Mark Williams with 24.8 seconds left extended North Carolina’s lead over Duke to 78-74. The Tar Heels won that game and punched their tickets to the title game.

Love will have plenty of suitors in the portal. He’s one of the best players to enter his name. And wherever he goes, we wish him the best of luck.
