Caitlin McGee, Karla Souza & Sasheer Zamata Cast In ‘Home Economics’ ABC Comedy Pilot

EXCLUSIVE: Bluff City Law star Caitlin McGee is set as a co-lead opposite Topher Grace in ABC’s Home Economics. Also cast as major characters in the single-camera family comedy pilot are How To Get Away With Murder alumna Karla Souza in her return to ABC, and Saturday Night Live alumna Sasheer Zamata. The project hails from from writers Michael Colton and John Aboud, the Tannenbaum Co., Lionsgate TV and ABC Studios.

Written by Colton and Aboud inspired by Colton’s family,, Home Economics is said to be in the vein of Modern Family and revolves around three adult siblings: one in the 1 percent, one middle-class, and one barely holding on.

McGee plays the oldest sibling, Sarah, a therapist for at-risk kids, married to a teacher, and they’re often scraping to make ends meet. Of her siblings, she earns the least money, but she does the most socially important work (as she frequently reminds them). She’s a doting mom to her two kids and tries to be a guru to her two brothers, who obviously would be lost without her wisdom. Grace plays Tom, the middle sibling and middle-class.

Souza will play Marina. A proud first-generation New Yorker whose parents came from Latin America, Marina is a former lawyer married to struggling novelist Tom (Grace). She’s constantly exhausted by caring for her seven-year-old daughter and toddler twin boys. Marina would like to go back to work one day, if only to escape her children. A rule-follower, Marina is often in conflict with her brother-in-law Connor, who never met a corner he didn’t try to cut. She’s pushed to the max and ready to call everyone out on how much easier they have it.

Zamata plays Denise, a superhumanly patient public-school teacher married to Sarah (McGee). She has a relentlessly positive attitude that often perplexes the rest of the family. Denise rarely loses her cool, unlike Sarah who can’t resist starting family drama.

Also cast in the pilot is child actor Shiloh Bearman as Gretchen, third sibling Connor’s seven-year-old daughter.

Colton and Aboud executive produce with Grace as well as Kim and Eric Tannenbaum of The Tannenbaum Company, whose Jason Wang is co-executive producer. Lionsgate Television’s Maxfield Elins will oversee the series on behalf of the studio

McGee was one of Fall 2019’s breakout as the female lead opposite Jimmy Smits in the NBC new drama series Bluff City law. She most recently co-starred in Amazon’s anthology series Modern Love with Dev Patel, and recurred on Apple’s comedy series Mythic Quest. She is repped by Gersh and Peikoff Mahan.

Souza was a series regular on HTGAWM for the first five seasons. She recurred on the sixth and final season while shooting Pablo Larrain’s upcoming limited series El Presidente for Amazon. After starring in 3 of the highest grossing films in Mexico (Que Culpa Tiene El Nino, Nosotros Los Nobles and Instructions Not Included) Souza was last seen on the big screen starring in Everybody Loves Somebody for writer/director Catalina Aguilar Mastretta. She is repped by CAA and Wishlab.

Actor-comedian Zamata, best known for her four-year tenure on SNL, will next be seen as the lead opposite Joe Keery in Eugene Kotlyarenko’s indie Spree, which premiered at Sundance this year. In TV, Zamata was one of the leads in the Comedy Central series, Robbie, and had a major recurring arc on Hulu’s Woke and TBS’ The Last OG. Recently, Zamata starred in Stella Meghie’s The Weekend opposite Dewanda Wise, which went to TIFF, SXSW and Tribeca before its theatrical release. She also can be heard hosting her podcast on the Earwolf network, “Best Friends,” with best friend, Nicole Byer. Zamata is repped by Gersh, Avalon, and Hansen, Jacobson, Teller.
