Caitlin Clark & Angel Reese’s WNBA Draft Fashion May Signal a Met Gala Invite

During March Madness, it was hard to avoid the names Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese. The NCAA athletes are superstars who are about to make their mark on the WNBA, and Monday evening’s draft proved that they not only own the basketball court, but the women also own the red carpet.

The fashion statements that Clark, Reese, and other rising professional players, like Cameron Brink, made, show that female athletes deserve just as much love from designers. With their profiles raised, following the most-watched women’s college basketball game in history, it seems that Vogue is also taking notice of what these incredible women are accomplishing. Reese was already the subject of a profile in the magazine earlier this month. She talked about following in the footsteps of tennis GOAT Serena Williams by announcing her big news with a Vogue fashion shoot.

In the September 2022 issue of the magazine, Williams revealed her retirement, so Reese did the same about entering the WNBA draft, even though she had a year of NCAA eligibility remaining — it was about having fashion and career wrapped into one major moment. “I’ve done everything I wanted to in college,” Reese told the outlet. “I’ve won a national championship, I’ve gotten [Southeastern Conference] Player of the Year, I’ve been an All-American. My ultimate goal is to be a pro—and to be one of the greatest basketball players to play, ever. I feel like I’m ready.” Not only is she ready to enter the professional ranks with the Chicago Sky team, but she might also be stepping onto the red carpet at the Met Gala.

While no one has confirmed Reese nor Clark’s official invite from Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, these women are the moment — you want them in attendance on fashion’s biggest night. Clark was dressed by Prada for the WNBA draft with a chic satin shirt and mini skirt set paired with black heels, a patent leather handbag, and rose-tinted sunglasses. Reese looked absolutely angelic in a backless, hooded black-and-silver outfit by Bronx and Banco — it was a showstopper! And Brink had us Googling the designer of her stunning black-and-white cutout gown — it’s Balmain. Let’s just say, the WNBA athletes rivaled any A-list celebrity at the Oscars this year.

So, don’t be surprised to see at least two or three of them make Wintour’s invite list because we know the fashion icon loves to have sports stars at her event. Williams, Simone Biles, Megan Rapinoe, Maria Sharapova, Brittany Griner, and Naomi Osaka have all made the cut in the past, so it will be exciting to see a new set of superstars grace the red carpet — and also the WNBA court.
