Cage the Elephant Lose Control on New Single ‘Neon Pill’
Cage the Elephant are feeling out of control on their latest single, “Neon Pill.” Reuniting with producer John Hill, the band marks their official return with an explosive record recounting an inescapable, if at times tumultuous, romance.
“Neon Pill” marks Cage the Elephant’s official follow-up to Social Cues, their Grammy Award-winning album released in 2019. Last year, the band released an extended edition of their 2011 album Thank You Happy Birthday, but otherwise haven’t launched into a new album cycle until now.

The stretch of time in between releases included some time on the road, the pandemic, and some legal trouble for frontman Matt Shultz. The singer and songwriter was arrested last January for for possessing two loaded firearms at a New York hotel. Shultz later pleaded guilty to three charges — two felonies, one misdemeanor — of attempted criminal possession of a weapon, criminal possession of a firearm, and criminal possession of a weapon in exchange for avoiding time in jail.
“Matt has worked hard to put this case behind him. He appreciates the opportunity to prove himself,” his attorney Sanford Talking told Rolling Stone at the time. “Nothing like this will never happen again. He can move forward in his life and with his music.”
As they prepare to launch their sixth studio album, Cage the Elephant are also coming up on the 15-year anniversary of their debut album Cage the Elephant, released state-side in March 2009. But it has felt more fitting to revisit Thank You Happy Birthday, which looked far into the future with the deep cut “2024.”
