Cable Ratings: Fox News Crushes HGTV for Top Primetime Spot

Fox News topped all of basic cable in both total viewers and primetime viewers for the week of Jan. 30, averaging 3.27 million primetime viewers compared to 1.64 million for HGTV, which finished as the second-most watched network.

USA, MSNBC and TBS round out the top five primetime networks, while cable news rival CNN finished seventh. The revamped Fox News primetime lineup featuring Tucker Carlson and Martha MacCallum has thrived and the network has been the No. 1 cable news channel for 15 consecutive years after winning the month of January.

Fox News also averaged 1.9 million total day viewers last week to win the category, while Nickelodeon finished second with 1.16 million viewers. HGTV, CNN and Adult Swim help make up the top five, with MSNBC finishing seventh.

Fox News beat CNN and MSNBC combined in both primetime and total day total viewership during the period.

MacCallum’s show, “The First 100 Days,” finished among the most-watched cable news programs last week, but she recently admitted to TheWrap that she isn’t sure about her plans after the first 100 days of the Trump administration.

I have not thought about that,” MacCallum said, adding that she would be “very happy to go back and do the morning show with Bill Hemmer.”

When “Tucker Carlson Tonight” was moved from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. to replace Megyn Kelly, Fox News temporarily moved MacCallum off “America’s Newsroom” with Hemmer and slipped her right into the 7 p.m. slot with “The First 100 Days.”

Based on the network’s ratings, the plan is working out.
