CAA Signs ‘The Dads’ Filmmaker Luchina Fisher

EXCLUSIVE: Luchina Fisher, the filmmaker behind Netflix’s forthcoming documentary short The Dads, has signed with CAA for representation.

Slated to debut on Netflix November 17th, the most recent short directed and produced by Fisher watches as five fathers of trans children join Dennis Shepard, the father of slain gay college student Matthew Shepard, for a weekend fishing trip in rural Oklahoma, finding common purpose across races, generations and experiences. As the men cast their rods into the river, they discuss what has brought them together: the love for their children.

The film, billed as a quiet meditation on fatherhood, brotherhood and manhood, was executive produced by Dwyane Wade and Jon Marcus for 59th and Prairie Entertainment, winning Best Documentary Short at the 2023 El Paso Film Festival. Netflix announced its acquisition of the title, named Runner-Up for the Documentary Short Audience Award at NewFest’s 35th anniversary festival, back in June.

An award-winning writer, director, and producer, Fisher’s first feature Mama Gloria, telling the story of Black transgender icon Gloria Allen, was broadcast on PBS and secured a GLAAD Media Award nomination last year. Her second feature, Locked Out, about the barriers to Black homeownership, won the award for Best Documentary Feature at the American Black Film Festival.

Among other past projects from Fisher is the documentary short Team Dream, which chronicles a Chicago duo’s final days of prep for the 2022 National Senior Games through the same-name training program, devoted to uplifting women of color. Produced by Queen Latifah, the short aired on BET and received numerous festival jury awards.

Fisher’s work has been supported by organizations such as Black Public Media, the Field Foundation, Sisters in Cinema, Brown Girls Doc Mafia, the Queen Collective, Women Make Movies, the Athena Film Festival’s Works in Progress Program, Firelight Media, and the National Endowment for the Humanities. The filmmaker was also honored with the PitchBLACK Film Forum’s top prize, for an upcoming project that will focus on Black queer representation in music, earlier this year.
