Céline Dion Goes Makeup-Free in New Music Video to Make a Strong Statement About Self-Love

She’s one of the most glamorous singers in the world, making it a surprising change of pace to see Céline Dion go makeup-free in the music video for her new single, “Imperfections.” Coupled with the lyrics for the empowering track, Dion’s bare face sends a strong message about learning to love yourself — and prioritizing that self-love, even in relationships.

Like the Dion fans are accustomed to, the “Imperfections” video is super chic. Shot entirely in black-and-white, the evocative video shows Dion on the set of high-fashion photo shoots, wearing couture gowns and posing with grace and fluidity, not unlike a dancer. The lyrics of the song juxtapose this image of perfection: “Yeah I got my own imperfections / I got my own set of scars to hide / I got my own imperfections / I can’t hold your heart when I’m fixing mine.” As the song continues to play, Dion sits down in front of a vanity mirror and begins wiping away all of her makeup.

As the song nears its end, she sits barefaced, embracing her “imperfections.” The song streaming in the background reinforces this rejection of self-criticism, saying, “They’re part of me and you are too / And I don’t really want to choose / Can you love them the way that I love you? / They make me who I am today / And they will never go away.”

It’s a beautiful thought — that, instead of picking ourselves apart and trying to pull out the things we perceive as flaws, we should value them for adding depth to who we are.

“Imperfections” is one of three singles that Dion released earlier this month in support of her album Coverage, which drops on Nov. 15 via Sony Music Entertainment Canada/Columbia. This marks the first music video to be released in association with the album. Coverage, which is Dion’s first English-language studio album in six years, is being hailed by Columbia Records as “a mix of beautiful ballads and edgy uptempo tracks.” If the rest of the album is as powerful as “Imperfections,” we can’t wait.
