Busy Philipps is the cool mom of the moment — even if her kids disagree!

On Monday, the actress, 44, stepped onto the pink carpet at the Mean Girls premiere in New York City with her daughter Birdie, 15.

Before the mother-daughter duo took their seats, Philipps, 43, spoke exclusively to PEOPLE about her excitement surrounding the musical remake of the 2004 cult-classic teen comedy.

“So, I’ve seen the movie, but I haven’t seen it with an audience, and I haven’t seen it — I haven’t talked to anyone who's seen it that isn’t like Tina [Fey],” the White Chicks actress tells PEOPLE of the Saturday Night Live alum.

Fey, 53, wrote and stars in the movie, reprising her role as Ms. Norbury. She attended the premiere, as did Lindsay Lohan, who played Cady Heron in the original film. Christopher Briney, Reneé Rapp and Angourie Rice were also in attendance.

While talking to PEOPLE, Philipps admitted that she wasn’t sure if she identified as a “cool mom” — a nod to SNL alum Amy Poehler, who also starred in the original as the mother of the Plastics’ leader Regina George (Rachel McAdams).

“Oh, I mean, no, of course not,” the Cougar Town talent tells PEOPLE.

She continues, “I think I’m cool, but my kids don’t think I’m cool. And I’m aware of that. I also think I’m very clear on the fact that I’m their mother and not their friend, so that definitely makes me uncool.”

The mother of two gushed about Birdie, who was off in the distance speaking to one of her mom’s producers, as being “so cool.”

Discussing the remake, Philipps shares that she, Fey, and Poehler, 52, (who are “all friends”) had an “understanding” that the musical “would be totally different” than the first.

Philipps also shares Cricket, 10, who was not present for the event, with ex Marc Silverstein.

Philipps shared the news of her taking on the role of Regina George's mom on her Instagram in March. "You know something? I really never have been a regular mom," she captioned the post with the hashtag #meangirls.

She also reposted the Deadline article on her Instagram Story, writing, "Reader, She cried (From happiness for once.)"

"The Tina Fey universe IS so real and omg how did I end up in it? I'm grateful every day for her friendship and support," she wrote in another Instagram story about the announcement.

Her first time dressing up in the part actually came in 2019, when she dressed up for Halloween with Birdie, who was dressed as Regina George.

"Her name is Regina George and she is a massive deal.💗 #meangirls #meangirlsbroadway 💗," Philipps captioned the shot.

Mean Girls opens in theaters on Jan. 12.
