Busy Philipps 'bummed' that James Franco story is stealing focus from her message

Busy Philipps was a guest on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen and while there she discussed the recent headlines involving James Franco assaulting her on the set of Freaks and Geeks.

Philipps has on multiple occasions told the story of Franco shoving her to the ground when they were both 19. In fact, while she was on WWHL in 2016 she discussed that altercation in depth, saying, “We really disliked each other — it’s been well documented. He, like, shoved me to the ground once. It was like really brutal, but we’re friends now, and we really like each other now as adults. But as kids we did not get along.”

Earlier in October, Philipps released a memoir called “This Will Only Hurt a Little.” But when she tied to promote the book, most media outlets chose to focus on the paragraph in which she talks about Franco pushing her to the ground.

Frustrated, Philipps spoke out on her Instagram page, saying, “My book is 308 pages, not one paragraph. The Franco story is used to illustrate a larger point about the way women are treated in this business and in life. There are no ‘allegations’ and no ‘accusations.’ It’s a story that I have been telling for years. James apologized. I accepted.”

During this most recent visit to WWHL, Philipps said, “When I was writing the book, because I talk about so many personal things, I always had in my head things that will get turned into clickbait. I naively did not think that would be one of them.”

Philipps went on to say, “It really bummed me out because I felt like I’m a woman in this industry who wrote a personal book about my experiences in life and in this industry, then the headlines were all about a man.”

Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen airs Sundays through Thursdays at 11 p.m. on Bravo.
