Building your home gym? Here are 6 essential pieces of gear for effective workouts

Creating a functional and effective home gym requires careful consideration of essential pieces that cater to individual fitness goals, space constraints and budget.

“A streamlined selection focusing on versatility, such as adjustable dumbbells, resistance bands, a sturdy bench, a high-quality yoga mat and perhaps a piece of cardio machinery, can cover most fitness needs effectively,” said Ron Edwards, owner, head coach and lead nutritionist at Underground Fitness, with three locations in metro Phoenix.

Here are six pieces to consider:

  • Weight plates, kettlebells, barbells: A selection of these items will provide endless options for deadlifts, rows, overhead presses and other strength-building moves.

  • Cardio equipment: Depending on your preference and space, choose a treadmill, elliptical machine or stationary bike for cardiovascular health and calorie burning.

  • Exercise mat: Protect your floors and enhance comfort during floor exercises with a high-quality exercise mat. It's essential for yoga, Pilates, stretching and core workouts.

  • Resistance bands: Versatile and portable, these bands add variety to workouts, providing resistance for strength training and assistance with stretching exercises. They're excellent for rehabilitating injuries and targeting smaller muscle groups.
