Buh-Bye! These 12 LGBTQ-inclusive shows are ending in 2024

We're constantly advocating for a more diverse representation of LGBTQ+ characters on television, as well as the involvement of actors, writers, directors, and crew members who understand the queer and/or trans experiences.

It always feels great to watch TV shows that reflect the world around us — whether that means having characters of different sexual orientations, gender identities, races, or backgrounds. While Hollywood has made a lot of progress in the past few years, it also seems like studios and streamers are mildly afraid of going up against this current anti-LGBTQ+ movement from conservatives.

The good news: several new and existing LGBTQ-inclusive shows are premiering or coming back for new seasons in 2024. The bad news: plenty of TV shows with lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and queer characters/talent are either airing their final seasons or have gotten canceled this year.

'Élite'

Netflix

Élite gave us some of the hottest, wildest, and most entertaining queer storylines on Netflix. This thrilling teenage soap opera features murders, betrayals, unlikely love stories, and characters who go away and suddenly come back — all while being inclusive of LGBTQ+ characters since its very first season.

If we're keeping it really real, things did get a little too wild (and even nonsensical) in season 7, so it's definitely for the best that Élite will end with season eight. We've loved this series for many years, but 2024 feels like the right time for Élite to wrap things up.

'What We Do in the Shadows'

FX

Just like the actual characters on FX's What We Do in the Shadows, we aren't quite ready to leave Staten Island yet.

We always had a particular affinity for Guillermo (Harvey Guillén) on the show, and his character arc has only gotten better since he officially came out. Nonetheless, it's been recently decided that WWDITS is ending with season 6, so we're ready to get our hearts stabbed as we say goodbye to our favorite eccentric vampires.

'Arcane'

Netflix

Set in Riot Games' League of Legends universe, the critically acclaimed Arcane animated series is finally releasing its second season in 2024. Unfortunately, this will be the last season of the Netflix show, which came as a surprise to many fans.

'Grown-ish'

Freeform

Freeform's Grown-ish, a spinoff of Black-ish, is also ending this year. There have been a few LGBTQ+ characters in the series, though there have also been complicated storylines in terms of queer representation.

But anyway! Grown-ish is concluding its run with part two of the show's sixth and final season.

'Young Royals'

Netflix

Would we love 10 more seasons of Young Royals? Yes, absolutely. Would it make sense, based on the premise of Young Royals, for the Netflix series to continue for many more seasons? Probably not.

Season 3 is the final installment of Young Royals, and that's definitely bittersweet! But if the writers, producers, and actors felt like the love story between Prince Wilhelm (Edvin Ryding) and Simon Eriksson (Omar Rudberg) was coming to an end, we totally respect that decision.

'Star Trek: Discovery'

Both long-time and new fans of Star Trek have fallen in love with same-sex couple Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp) and Hugh Culber (Wilson Cruz) on Paramount+'s Star Trek: Discovery. This franchise has always been diverse and inclusive, and it's wonderful to see that it continues to highlight those stories.

Unfortunately, Paramount did announce in 2023 that the fifth season of Star Trek: Discovery would be its last, so this beloved show is officially ending in 2024.

'The Umbrella Academy'

Netflix

The Umbrella Academy is another fun and inclusive show ending in 2024. When actor Elliot Page came out as a trans man, the Netflix series actively turned his role into a male character (Viktor), thus reflecting Page's real-life transition.

We're actually pretty sad about The Umbrella Academy coming to an end with its fourth season. We wanted to see so much more from Viktor!

'Outlander'

Starz

Even though Outlander isn't inherently queer, it's featured a few queer characters and themes over the years. Some of those characters even became fan-favorites! In any case, the Starz series is wrapping things up in 2024 with part two of its seventh season.

'Good Omens'

Prime Video

Good Omens was renewed for its third and final season in 2023, and fans are still expecting that last installment to drop at some point in 2024. It'll be hard saying goodbye to our devious demon Crowley (David Tennant) and celestial angel Aziraphale (Michael Sheen), but the series is officially coming to an end this year.

'You'

Netflix

Netflix's You, developed by Greg Berlanti and Sera Gamble, featured many queer characters, storylines, and actors during its first four seasons. However, the creepy saga of Joe, a.k.a. Will, a.k.a. Jonathan (Penn Badgley) is coming to an end with a fifth and final season scheduled for 2024.

'Good Trouble'

Freeform

The final episodes of Good Trouble — a spinoff of The Fosters — aired in 2024, and Freeform has already announced that it has canceled the series. This means that Gael, a bisexual character played by Tommy Martinez, is now officially gone from our screens!

'Sort Of'

CBC/Max

The third and final season of Sort Of, a Canadian show about a nonbinary millennial who has Pakistani parents, came to its ultimate conclusion in February 2024 on Max.
