A group of Buffalo Bills players were seen on video confronting a Philadelphia Eagles fan during Sunday's game at Lincoln Financial Field amid a heated confrontation, in which players say the fan was "threatening" them and their families.

During Sunday's match-up, before the Bills lost in overtime 37-34, defensive end Shaq Lawson, defensive tackle Jordan Phillips and other players and staff members were filmed approaching a fan in the stadium's front row.

After Phillips appeared to get into a verbal argument with the spectator, who was pointing at the player, his teammate Lawson then appeared to shove the fan before the argument was quickly split up and players walked away.

The scene in the video, widely shared by Barstool Sports, could also be seen in a clip posted by Buffalo sports anchor Dan Fetes.

Phillips later shared a message to Instagram, explaining how the incident came to be. "I love the crowd I love rowdy fans it makes the game fun," he wrote. "But one thing I’m not going to tolerate is someone threatening me or my family."

"This is a line that shouldn’t be crossed."

Lawson, whose own Instagram account is currently private, wrote that he's "all about the fans" and has "a lot of respect" for his opponents, per the WHAM reporter.

"Before the game yesterday, there was a fan behind our bench who was making life threatening remarks towards us and our families," he reportedly wrote. "We asked Philadelphia security to remove the fan, but he was allowed to stay for the entire game. Eventually, our emotions boiled over and I made a mistake. For that, I apologize, but there are certain lines that should not be crossed."

WHAM's Mike Catalana also reports, citing sources, that the NFL and stadium security reps were informed of threats made by the fan and that the spectator remained in his spot during the game.

Reps for both the Bills and the Eagles organizations did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for further information on Monday.

Bills head coach Sean McDermott told reporters on Monday that the incident was a "very unfortunate situation."

"I was brought into the loop on it this morning about the incident that took place during the game," he said. "It's unfortunate that that would go on during a game in particular. What I'm aware of is that people were asked to have the fan removed and nothing was done."

"So, at the end of the day, that's not for us to concern ourselves with at this point and it's just unfortunate overall that that would take place during a game."
