Bucs’ Sean Murphy-Bunting headed to Titans on 1-year deal: report
TAMPA ― Sean Murphy-Bunting appeared headed to superstardom when he had interceptions in three consecutive playoff games during the Bucs’ run to a Super Bowl championship following the 2020 season.
But the 2019 second-round pick from Central Michigan was plagued by injuries, including a dislocated elbow suffered in the 2021 opener against the Cowboys.
Given the Bucs’ salary cap situation and decision to re-sign cornerback Jamel Dean to a four-year, $52 million contract, Murphy-Bunting became expendable.
According to multiple reports, Murphy-Bunting visited the Titans on Monday and expected to receive a one-year contract worth up to $5 million.
Murphy-Bunting would become the second member of the Bucs’ secondary from the 2019 draft class to leave the team. Safety Mike Edwards agreed to a 1-year, $3 million contract with the Chiefs last week that could be worth up to $5 million.
Defensive tackle Rakeem Nunez-Roches agreed to a three-year, $12-million contract with the Giants last week.
Murphy-Bunting finished his Bucs career with 188 tackles, one sack, 21 passes defensed, 6 interceptions, 4 forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.
His three-game playoff streak in the 2021 postseason was among the best in league history. In consecutive playoff games, he recorded interceptions against Washington’s Taylor Heinicke, the Saints’ Drew Brees and the Packers’ Aaron Rodgers.
