NASCAR driver Bubba Wallace is opening up about his depression and how his wife Amanda has been “a massive help” in improving his mental health.

Wallace, 30, opened up to The Associated Press last week about social media posts he’s made in the past detailing his depression and how he’s managed it.

The seven-year NASCAR pro finished in a career-best 10th place in the NASCAR Cup Series season last month, but soon after the final race he took to social media and expressed disappointment in his finish.

Wallace wrote to his Instagram followers that he had experienced “little to no emotion” after the race ended – even despite his close friend Ryan Blaney winning the Cup Series championship.

“You would think your bud winning the championship would bring that joy and excitement back. Sadly it did not,” he wrote, according to the AP. “My wife can see that I’m off but I don’t have the what or the why that I’m feeling this way to allow her to help me. To my peeps out there staring at a blank wall, I’m with you. Tomorrow is another day. Another opportunity. Keep after it.”

Weeks later, Wallace met up with Blaney to celebrate his championship and told the AP he’s been feeling better in recent weeks – in large part to working on his mental health with help from his wife.

“I wake up and my wife’s there. She’s like, ‘How are you feeling today?’ And it’s like, one of those days,” Wallace told the outlet. “We keep each other on our toes. We play video games together. So she’s a massive help. And then the next thing you know, clock strikes 5 o’clock and it’s like, ‘How’s it going?’ and I’m good. It just kind of blows over.”

Wallace and his wife will celebrate their first wedding anniversary on New Year’s Eve. The NASCAR driver often shares loving photos of him alongside Amanda, who he first became engaged to in July 2021.

"We have so much fun together,” Wallace told PEOPLE last year ahead of their wedding.

Amanda wasn't afraid to gas up her husband-to-be at the time, either.

"We just have such a good bond," she told PEOPLE ahead of their wedding. "I love the time we spend together. We could sit around together all day every day and we don't get tired of one another.”

"He's also handsome and charming," Amanda said.
